Thought I'd experiment with the polling function. I hope it lets you comment on why you chose the kid you did!

I used to be a big Brigitta fan because I feel like young me was similar to her, but recently I think Friedrich is a bit more interesting. In my thoughts, he's at the age where he probably had a crush on Maria (which I think is super adorable and probably causes a lot of confusion once she becomes his mother). But also, he's at the age where he desperately needs his father to be his role model and it makes me happy that he finally gets that. ALSO, that look on his face when he says "it's been so cold lately, they turned blue". Like, he knows he screwed everyone over on that one.
Sooooo, Friedrich, but I guess I'm basing it mostly off things that aren't in the movie, haha.

Louisa! well, I don't know why but I think, I can see myself from her. We are just the same, a girl who wants to have fun in her growing up years by playing tricks and such a 'tomboy'. lol. And Maybe because She's just a quiet type of person, A secretive one. oh I forgot, I was named after her. We really have a big similarities.

Interesting choices! Louisa, I totally get where you're coming from.
Forever - I think you are right about his crush on Maria, look at him during "Lonely Goatherd!" And he looks so stunned and pleased when his father joins them in singing "TSOM."
You probably know this already, but I think both of these responses are, actually, how Nicholas Hammond felt during the filming - he adored JA, and he was in awe of CP and didn't get to interact with him much, the post-rowboat scene was one of the last scenes filmed, so the emotion of finally getting to connect to CP might have been real.
I'm having trouble deciding between Brigitta, because she's so clever, and Marta, because she's so sweet. Have to mull a bit more.

Oh yea, I love the story about how Nicholas saw Julie on Broadway as Eliza and then couldn't believe he was sitting on the end of the bed from her.

I've always loved Brigitta, since we were closest in age when I fell in love with the movie. I even used to copy her hair styles:). I think Angela did a tremendous job as Brigitta, she acts the part so well and you can really see she was a pro and used to acting. My favorite however is Friedrich. I completely believe the explanation Forever Julie gave. I also love it when, in the "From Liesl to Gretl" special on the 40th ann dvd, one of the girls pointed out that Nicky was so in awe with her and that when he finally met her he was "in his pyjamas". (Although technically speaking that's not true since they had met before during rehearsal. Still, it was a funny remark). Also, Nicholas Hammond seems to have a sense of self-deprecating humour which I find very funny.

Brigitta's my favourite, mostly because I self-identify as her. Bookish, quiet, extremely observant, not fond of crowds, affectionate and passionate (though sometimes well-hidden!). I can't stand Liesl (though I'm learning to like her more as I write my long TSOM story), and I find Louisa fascinating. She's a tough nut to crack, and I really like that. It gives me something to work with.
I love the boys -- they're great fun to play with and are always a welcome break from the monotony of stupid girl problems. *snicker*
And honestly, who doesn't like the littlest two? They are precious!!

I've honestly never been a huge fan of Gretl, there's just something about her that bothers me. Maybe because I see her as the kid that's always trying to get attention and is annoying because of it. I don't think I have any solid reason though, haha

i wonder how many of us made choices based on our own birth order. i'm the oldest of three, i picked liesl. the truth is that i've had a change of heart about liesl over time. i've forgiven her for her foolish fling w/ rolf (ugh, what a loser). since we're saying... i think too much was expected of liesl. i think she has a special connection w/ her father b/c she's the firstborn. and i think that if maria didn't show up when she did, she was going to run off and marry the first nazi to give her a second look. not rolf, though. lord, please not rolf.

Interesting thought! I'm an only child, and I've always loved any show (movie or TV) with a large family, because I thought it would be fun to grow up with lots of brothers and sisters! (I was a huge "Brady Bunch" fan, too!) They say we "onlies" tend to have characteristics of both the oldest and the youngest, and my pick in this poll is Gretl! Hmmmm.....

I guess I'm going to go with Brigitta, for many of the reasons Cass refers to - also there is something very sweet about the way B squeezes Maria's hand in greeting when they return from Paris. I do think Marta is very sweet and I like her lisp. I'm the third of four. But I'm not sure what to make of that. I was the youngest for seven years, and in many ways I'm a youngest - pretty easygoing and secure, but not terribly independent. Like -- I don't identify with Liesl at all. I have nothing against her, and I like the way she taunts her father during the blueberry scene . But she's obviously taken on a lot of responsibility, for which I admire her but can't relate to. My older siblings STILL tell me what to do and I am in my late 50s and we don't even have parents anymore!

I like them all, but I am going to vote for Marta because she is so endearing with her lisp (and the pink parathol). I also love the way she sings the words to My Favourite Things in bed with Maria, even though she isn't supposed to have heard the lines yet!

I voted for Gretl. I just love how she tells the rest of them to stop hounding Maria because she "likes" her when they first meet. Little kids and dogs can recognize a kind heart and a loving spirit. I also like when she looks for Maria's approval to give the flowers to Elsa.
That said, I truly like all of them, and how different their characters all are, even with the few lines they each have.

I also love that moment when she looks to Maria - I think we talked about that recently - what it tells us about their relationship.

I love all of them. But if you had to put a gun to my head and make me pick just one (aargh)...Friedrich However I honestly couldn't tell you why...maybe it has something to do with the fact that he now lives somewhere near me, or that I can identify with his obsession with Julie or something else entirely? For some reason I always found the boys (actor wise) more interesting than the girls.

Ooh this is a hard one! I'm an only child as well, so I can only say that I was really jealous of families with multiple kids. In general, I like all the kids, and like I said, I find it hard to pick one. I'm mostly like Brigitta, I love books and I notice many things other people might not see at first glance.. Though I'm having less of a hard time than I used to have when I'm surrounded my crowds or during big parties..
On the other hand, I love the boys. Maybe because of my personal situation. My mother has had two miscarriages and two kids (one's me) were born prematurely. So in a way, even though I am an only child, I feel like, as much as I know that, I actually (would) have (had) three brothers.. But actually I don't, of course. So that's what makes it somewhat weirdish special for me. My favourite would be Friedrich.. I love his facial expressions, and the way he acts around JA.. Like while Do Re Mi, when he takes her arm, and during So Long, Farewell in the hall, when he has this sweet moment of eyecontact with her, nods, and then looks straight forward again, smiling. I find him endearing.

Mine is a tie between Louisa and Brigitta. And then Kurt. I feel like Louisa has such a personality but interestedly gets lost in the shuffle. Strangely she seems to be the most (in personality) to Maria, but yet Maria herself can't figure her out. I love Brigitta, she is perhaps the most like her father.

I chose Friedrich - I can totally see him growing up into the next Captain von Trapp. He's very endearing - ditto those comments above about him. Also love the way he says goodbye to all the adults (including Baroness Schraeder) in that Edelweiss scene - what a chivalrous young man.

OH, laurynvi, yes, that "good night" scene is great. Definitely worth some micro analysis. I'll have to get to that soon!

It's hard for me to pick who my favorite von Trapp child is, as I love them all and their different, unique personalities, but if I absolutely had to choose one, it would have to be Marta. In truth, I never really liked Liesl as much as the rest (though I think that has to do with her foolish attraction to Rolf, ick). I always appreciated Friedrich for being the oldest boy and the most gentlemanly and I loved Louisa because although she was the prankster of the group and a total tomboy, she was the hardest to get to know because she secretly seemed to be the most sensitive next to Marta and was afraid to be hurt again. Kurt was always adorable, especially because he was always hungry, and seemed to be criminally underrated compared to the rest of his siblings. Brigitta used to be my favorite, as she was very observant and a bookworm much like myself, but as I got older I liked her less and I wasn't 100% sure why until I realized that it was because she was almost too sassy for my liking (for example, her opinion on Maria's dress when she first arrives; the amount of sass in her words is almost overwhelmingly hilarious to me). Marta is my favorite because she is a sweet but shy girl, again much like I would describe myself. She, like Kurt, is almost in the shadow of her siblings, especially Gretl. She also is the most sensitive (she is the first to start crying at the dinner table) and seems to need just as much physical reassurance as she does verbal (she is the most physically affectionate of the bunch). And Gretl is of course the baby and always a delight in her sassy little 5 year old way. In other words, my favorite list would have to go Marta, Louisa, Friedrich, Kurt, Brigitta, Gretl, and Liesl... I apologize, my over-analysis ran away with my words again... Oops XD

My favourite von Trapp child kept changing as I grew up. It was mainly based on what age I was at the time. To further clarify, when I was 5, my favourite vT child was Gretl. When I was 7, it was Marta and when I was 10, it was Brigitta. But when I reached 13, I didn't have a favourite anymore.
If I were to choose a favourite, it would be Marta. She is very sweet and sincere right from the moment she meets Maria. She hasn't yet reached the age where she would be snarky and/or play tricks. You could say the same for Gretl, however, she didn't talk a whole lot in the movie, therefore, I was unable to make a clear judgement of her.
I was about to choose Brigitta but I ruled her out because of her rather rudish, critical remark to Maria upon greeting ("I think your dress is the ugliest one I ever saw!").
As for Louisa, I wasn't a big fan of her since she was one of the main tricksters in the family. Though I admired her hair colour while growing up with the film.
The boys-Kurt and Friederich-I didn't have much of an opinion about them. I was less interested in the boys when I was a kid and cared more about the girls. Now that I'm older, I would say that the boys were good-natured for the most part, they hardly caused any trouble.
And Liesl. I didn't like her as a kid as she appeared to be snobby from the beginning. Today, I've grown to like her a bit more. As the eldest of the von Trapp children, she is the one who unites the children when times are rough.
That was my two cents for you. A rather mediocre to poor analysis of the characters from my all-time favourite movie, but I tried. I'm tired too -.-

Why do you think they chose to change the children's names in the movie from those of the children in real life? I understand why they would change the child named Maria to something else because it is confusing to have 2 Marias, but what about the other names? Rupert, Agathe, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna, and Martina all sound like nice names.

not all of them very relatable for non-German audiences (I don't know how much they aimed for a global audience back then, although it became a global phenomenon!). Certainly not Hedwig. I can't really prove this, but I feel like some of the names they chose have a much lighter flavor of being, you know, kind of European but less specific to one language or country? ?
