On a side note, I met one of the great-granddaughters of the real Captain and Maria von Trapp when I visited the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont a few years ago. Her name is Carla and she's the granddaughter of Eleonore. Carla led the historical tour and has quite a sense of humour. She's also a professional skier!

It must be odd to have the legacy of TSOM behind you all the time - you would have to decide whether to embrace it (and maybe profit from it) or turn your back on it. But turning your back on it is like denying your own family history, in a way.

IRL didn't Georg just refer to himself as "Trapp?" That's what the book is called. I think the "von" was an honorary title that kind of dried up after they left Austria. but I know utility_singer will know for sure.

Their last name was Trapp, the 'von' came as part of the "Ritter" (knighthood, sort of) title bestowed on Georg's father, and it was properly used by the rest of the family. Of course, he later earned that honor himself. You'll notice many Germanic names in the US still use "Van" or "Von", as the families simply kept it. That explains why the lodge is "Trapp Family" and not "von Trapp".
