So, I've lately been low-key obsessing over the film that's in German. Which, by the way, is amazing. Even though I understand only a few words.
Anyway. Is it just me or in the German film, does Maria's hair look pinned up? Or am I imagining it? Thoughts?

So, I've lately been low-key obsessing over the film that's in German. Which, by the way, is amazing. Even though I understand only a few words. Anyway. Is it just me or in the German film, does Maria's hair look pinned up? Or am I imagining it? Thoughts? So, I am bringing back this debate. I was watching clips of the German film (1956) a couple weeks ago, and more specifically, the thunder storm scene. If you look closely at Maria's hair, it looks like it is tied back in a ribbon kind of close to the nape of her neck. Even after a year, I am convinced that she pins it back. Her hair looks like medium length (just barely past her collarbone), making it more difficult to see whether or not it's tied back. I have also not been able to find a picture to showcase my observation. I am thinking that her hair might be kind of curled when it's pinned back (or if it isn't pinned back, it's short and curly). Again, what are your thoughts/opinions on this?

I have never seen this version of the movie, but I just looked up the clip on Youtube. See attached pic. Is this the right version Silver-White-Winters? She definitely has longer hair that is pulled back. I would say she keeps it pulled back tight and tidy during the day (as would be proper), but at night, it is kind of a "messy bun" look. I like the idea of her having long hair. Clearly she doesn't in the 1965 film, though I kind of wish she would have. indigoblue didn't you say you saw a play somewhat recently where it was revealed in the "hat off" scene that she actually had long beautiful hair under her hat and the audience gasped out loud? Yes, and it was a show-stopping moment! Georg's eyes popped out and so did everyone else's.

YES!!!!! Thank you for finding that! I like the idea of her having long hair that's like collarbone length. Which I am guessing is the length in the original film. I might get slight hate for this, but I feel that even though Julie Andrews' version of Maria is amazing and she pulls off the short hair quite well, I feel like the length that Ruth Leuwerik's hair appears to be in the 1956 film is more... I am not sure how to put this, not necessarily more accurate to the times, but I suppose I mean that the longer length is more visually appealing when it comes to imagining what her hair looks like in fics? If that made sense? Anyway. Regardless of length of hair and the color of it, both Ruth & Julie portray Maria beautifully. Maybe we could either create a side-by-side comparison pic, or find one? It would be neat to compare the two versions of Maria.

I've always thought Julie's hair was too short to have curlers.

I've always thought Julie's hair was too short to have curlers. I have always thought that as well. They wouldn't work in and/or with her hair length. Unless, they were small curlers. That could work, couldn't it? I know, for example, my mom's hair is about like Maria's in length, and she can fit small perm-type curlers in her hair. Just not what you would classify as 'normal' sized curlers. Were curlers from the TSOM time era similar in style, or were thy totally different? I am now curious and feel the need to do research.

I know people with hair as short as Maria's that use curlers. It doesn't make their hair curly as much as it makes it poofy, once they are taken out and brushed through.
Did Maria have long hair and then have to cut when she joined the abbey? This might explain why she even had curlers in her possession. I don't know any nuns with long hair. It makes sense to keep it short if it is always under a wimple. Maybe a haircut is part of the initiation process, similar to giving all your clothes away to the poor? But then why wouldn't she grow it out once she decided to marry Georg? I had to be months between the gazebo and the wedding, plenty of time to add some length if that was her preferred style.

I like the pic, but even that looks like she has short hair and then an extension piece for a ponytail.

She looks much older than Maria, but I think this was taken before TSOM?!

It is amazing what makeup can do! You are right, this was before Mary Poppins and TSOM. She was on Broadway in Camelot in 1960!
