also, it's not unreasonable to think that things could have gone downhill even more from where they were at the start of the movie, even without elsa. i wouldn't think of it as writing the children OOC. (OOOOH, am I cool fanfic person or what, using acronyms like OOC?) I think of it as a dream. Which it might be, right?

a dream, yes... something like that. she may wonder how real it is at the end. at the end of IAWL (more acronyms) george gets the copy of tom sawyer that clarence was reading and the bell rings to let him know he got his wings, so... not a dream? i haven't woven the bell ringing. maybe the bells at nonnberg start ringing and wings get handed out left and right. not really necessary for my story. just a little humor for myself.
anyway... you're right, though. elsa doesn't have to be the real reason for the misery. the kids want their father's attention and now he's home and still ignoring them. and they all find ways to rebel, especially liesl since he comes down on her like she's a child. i think elsa's presence only exacerbates things.
wow, big word for a saturday night. good one, laurel.
