Says the girl who appropriately places the blame on her work demands for the fact that her ears are in a permanent state of soreness from blasting the first ten tracks of the Frozen soundtrack way too much. And I regret nothing. What are your favourite driving jams? Right now I've got Frozen, obviously, TSOM (gotta do something with that Lea Michele-inundated 45th anniversary CD, after all), Youtube star Tiffany Alvord's two most recent albums My Heart Is and Legacy, Lea Michele's Louder (I know, the irony is screaming here), and Julie's Broadway: The Music of Richard Rodgers album.

So we are currently switching between Frozen and Tangled when the kids are in the car - either that or they request, to my pure delight, The Sound of Music (I love my kids!) When I'm alone, I either a. Put my iPhone on random so I get a bit of everything that is on it (I have lots of different things from gospel music to Pink, Robbie Williams, Michael Buble, Delta Goodrem, Evanescence oh and my new fave thanks to lemacd, Michael Card) b. Sarah Brightman - anything and everything c. Decide what the "Julie" for the day is. cass - I LOVE the Broadway of Richard Rogers album too - it is one of my all time faves. The other one is Love Me Tender. Oh yum! I don't have all my Julie albums on my iPhone as I have too many, but I rotate what's on there - I listened to the Lass with the Delicate Air the other day, I hadn't listened to it for ages but it was sooooo good!

I only just got my learner's permit, so I don't feel that comfortable driving with music on yet, but when I do I'll listen to a) One Direction *cue teenaged boyband-squeals* b) a lot of Disney soundtracks, particularly The Hunchback of Notre Dame because that score is ridiculously gorgeous. c) Broadway stuff like Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, and Phantom of the Opera, which tops TSOM as my favorite musical of all time. That's what my username references, actually.

Ah, I hear ya, thoughts-of-joy-dreams-of-love. I went from my temporary permit at 17 to college full time for five years (thus almost no driving), to graduating in May, FINALLY getting my license on the tail end of 21, and doing ALL the driving for work. It's still a little surreal, and when I was still learning, I had to have dead silence. Now I can't get enough of music while driving, though I still hate the radio with a raging passion. Must be the lack of showtuneage.

My commute is horrible, although I can usually arrange to stay home one day a week: 80 miles round trip, and probably 2.5-3 hours in the car. And .... I don't listen to music. Occasionally I'll listen to TSOM, or even run the film on my iPad and listen to it. Maybe Les Mis, once in a while. Mostly, I like to think about what I'm writing. I like to talk on the phone with friends via headset. There have been times when I've gotten into books on tape, too. But ... no music

For me that's a little crazy, I can't stop listening to music, I even put my Ipod on whenever I have to prepare something to eat or go anywhere, really. I don't drive But if I did it would be my top 3 musicals of the month and Julie's early albums (I love how she sounds in Lass with the Delicate Air), some piano music, oh and I used to love frozen too but my 3 year old ruined it for me.

I don't know, it's like I have some sensory thing where too many things going on at once, especially sounds, really disturb me. How I raised two sons I can't imagine. Many people I know want music on all the time! I DO like having music on long drives and singing along - show tunes, popular music from when I was younger - but on the commute I like thinking more.

i used to need music on in the car all the time, but over the last half year or so i've discovered that i prefer to turn it all off when i'm driving by myself. i do think about my stories, even talk to myself out loud to talk through problems i'm having with writing.
but when my kids are in the car, that is never an option. music makes them stop talking. one sings. the other plays air guitar or drums. and i don't get to pick. ever.

Ha, lemacd! I feel for you. My friends and I abide by a rule where whoever's driving gets control of the music. My family (read: dad and brothers) can't keep their hands off the radio from the minute they get in the passenger seat. AND they have a perpetual need for the windows to be down. Easy when you have short hair!

That's a good rule. Fortunately my boys listen to my CDs we have only a few kid ones. @charleybec sent us one they LOVE and I find it too adorable to hear them sing with an Aussie accent. I've developed a trick where I pick the genre I'm in the mood for then pick the cd they like that suits it. Sadly Julie Andrews is not on their radar. So I listen to her in the kitchen and it keeps out from underfoot when I'm trying to make dinner.

That's a good way to keep yourself from going slowly insane over something that should be a happy thing.
I spend a lot of time in the kitchen... if I could find my old iPod, it'd be on a stereo dock in the living room all the time. We used to have a stereo system actually IN our kitchen, and I used the hell out of it, but then we moved... Lately I've just been pulling up Parks and Recreation on Netflix and playing it constantly with my laptop turned up loud while I cook/bake. For such a little thing, it has a surprisingly good sound system. I could probably hear it from my bedroom on the second floor of my house if I left the door open.

I just discovered that if I sit my iPod in an empty coffee mug (yeah duh empty but sometimes you have to be obvious) the volume on my iPod is perfect for tooling around the kitchen. Every other iPod owner probably knew this. I'm slow to the party most of the time.

I didn't know that.... and I prefer to have my coffee mugs full of coffee I actually have an iPod dock with an attached CD player/radio in the kitchen so I use that if I need to listen to music in the kitchen. But honestly, the quiet of being in a different room from the kids is usually enough for me.

I texted my dad today asking how to adjust the sound settings in my Caravan because Julie's Richard Rodgers album is my favouritest ever, and it sounds like utter crap in my van. The orchestrations drown out the vocals from how the stereo system is wired and I don't know how to fiddle with it to get the balance right. He laughed and was like, "Why do you bother? It's a Dodge." I just want my Julie fix! *sigh* The struggle is real.

Oh, I understand augiesannie. My sister is just like that as well. I've always been able to block some of my senses anytime I feel overwhelmed but I can imagine how you feel. It must be like when I'm having many thoughts at once and I just need to focus on one of them... Oh well, I wish I had the peace of mind to be able to handle silence a little better . I never knew about the Ipod in a cup thing but then again I have an Ipod shuffle so just do everything with my headphones on. I really think there should be a stereo system in every kitchen, cass, but that's just me.

Agree about the sounds. There are certain songs that I simply cannot listen to ---whether it be tones or too much going on or whatever. Background noise in general doesn't bother me, but crowd noises on televised sporting events or whatnot? YIKES. Overloads my brain and I can feel my spinal column twitching.

- haha! Love this answer!
- I love Sweeney Todd! I remember going to see that with a friend and he did not know it was a musical. I've got the JD version and the one with Angela Lansbury. I love the soundtrack!
Ditto! I can't stand the radio either. My only exceptions are the occupational listen during Christmas season. And back when I was at Junior collage I did listen to the collage station. They actually played a variety of music on there. Classical, Jazz, Electronica, Video Game Soundtrack, etc... vs regular radio with boring top 40. Plus it's so filed with so many stupid commercials.
My goodness! You must really love your job!
I listen to all of my music in the car. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music and listen lots of different things. Sometimes it depends on my mood and sometimes I feel like listening to a certain/singer or band. Like Cass, I hate the radio and don't like what's on there. I listen to a lot of hybrid bands and singers.

I have an aux output so I listen to pandora off of my phone a lot. My husband likes to listen to talk radio which I can't stand because I have to have music playing. I usually win out in that battle, lol.
