I must say, I did part of my training for elderly patient care in old peoples' homes, and was always amazed at the camaraderie and cheerfulness of people when they had joined in a rousing medley of (especially) wartime songs from the shows - it made me want to join in, although I didn't know the old songs well enough! I can well believe it wards off dementia.

I actually saw this video posted on facebook and this older person who was quite out of it and didn't really respond to people, but when they played old time Big Band music for him he smiled like crazy and his eyes lit up like the 4th of July. Music is such a powerful language so yeah it doesn't surprise me either.
