Ah thanks bluesatinsashes! Oh cool coincidence augiesannie! The Cold War would be something I'm pretty interested in, but I imagine learning about it whilst it's actually happening would be a different matter altogether!

Now my turn: My parents are both from the south-west tip of Wales, and their forebears had been there since time immemoriam (but not Welsh-speaking).
I was born and bred in England; I now live in the South West (the bit that sticks out at the bottom), and speak English (Ha!) and can make myself misunderstood in French anytime I try.

Thanks to bluesatinsashes for pointing out this thread. It's really interesting seeing where everyone comes from. So, here goes... my very boring bio! What country were you born in? UK - county of Cumbria-What country do you live in? UK - county of Lancashire-What is your ethnicity/where are your ancestors from? All of my ancestors are Scottish, and I'm very proud to say my blood is Scottish through and through! ( highly disputed by my hubby who says I can't be Scottish when I was born in England)-What languages do you speak? Only English I'm afraid which is pretty pathetic in this day and age

I'm hoping to see another Canadian here!

Again thank you to bluesatinsashes for telling me about this. Where was I born? England - in London. Where do I live now? England - in the county of Oxfordshire, to follow Nicky's example What is your ethnicity/where are your ancestors from? I'm English through and through, and my mum's parents were English (but she grew up in the Lebanon), my dad's mum was born in Germany and escaped to England on the Kindertransport before the outbreak of WW2 and my dad's dad comes from Czechoslovakia which obviously doesn't exist anymore, but he also escaped the Nazis by escaping down the one end of the street as they came up the other. What languages do you speak? English, and a kind of sort of passable amount of Italian (GCSE-level).

Wow, you're grandmother was on the kindertransport, that is an amazing story and family legacy. How old was she? Did she ever see her family again? There is a wonderful one woman show going around the US called the "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" about one persons experience with the kindertransport. It's based on a book of the same name and is a true story. I've been meaning to read the book as I have heard it is really good. The play has a twist at the end of it that I won't disclose here in case someone actually goes to see it at some point. I haven't seen it, but I want to, I just sort of found out about the ending by accident.
I'm a history teacher and I just find this absolutely amazing. So part of your family is German then.

No problem bluesatinsashes. Yep, @clarinetjamie - she was one of the youngest children there (about three years old) and her mother did make it out with her little brother. Her father was in a concentration camp for a couple of years before the start of the war, but he was released and made it to England too. Oh wow - that does sound amazing - have you read 'I Came Alone' ? It's a collection of stories from the people who came out on the Kindertransport - my grandmother got it for me when I was younger and some of them are so harrowing and sad. It is amazing and it definitely makes you think, especially with how differently we're handling the current refugee crisis.

That is an amazing story. You need to make sure you pass that down when you have kids of your own.
