I don't think Max would still have been holding the telegram if it had been candid - maybe they just wanted to take a shot of the scene that way round to see their expressions better, because the way it was actually shot, CP and EP have to turn around to speak to Max, and there would be a danger of us not seeing their faces well enough to judge some subtle and important expressions.
