One thing I've always loved about TSOM is that the movie's ending - and the fact that it differs from the real life actions of the von Trapps - allows views and us writers to really sink our teeth into the 'mysteries' of what happened to them after they fled Austria. Some of my absolute favourite fanfictions are the ones that deal with the time period of their lives; so much so, that my newest fanfiction is about just that. I was wondering, since this is such a prominent topic (and unknown when you separate the movie from the lives of the real von Trapp family) if you guys have your own theories and ideas as to what course of action they took once they were over the alps. Or, what you would have them do if you were tasked with writing some kind of sequel or follow up? Personally, the idea that I've always held in my mind is that they would have spent an undisclosed amount of time in Switzerland before - most likely - making their way to England (due to Agethe's parents) before eventually - as we know - moving to America. Again, though, I tend to keep the movie family separate from the real family What about you guys? ~Deadlyfandoms

I’ve always felt that Georg was so ‘Austrian’ that they would have stayed in Switzerland rather than moved to England; that meant that they could continue to speak German, which would have meant that they would have settled in more quickly.

I think at first they would have stayed in Switzerland, where George could try to retrieve some of the money from his foreign accounts, make some arrangements and wait for chances or offers from US. But as the war went on, once they got a good offer, they would eventually leave Europe and possibly move to the US.

Does anybody know why they left England for America? I know it was seen as the land of opportunity, but it would have been a big step for an older person such as G.

I think that was where their musical career took them primarily. I could be wrong but I think the agent/representative that offered to manage them was in the US.

An added factor may have been that the question of who won the war was in the balance for many years; even though they had got to England, they may not have felt sure that they had escaped the clutches of the Nazis, despite this. Nevertheless, there were quite a few Austrian families who settled in London (and are still there), so they would have had other Austrians to mix with.

I was always under the impression it had to do with getting naturalized in the US so that the older Trapp men wouldn't have to go into the army?
