The first thousand or so times I watched the film, of course, I mooned over Georg's handsome swooniness at this moment. But you know, there's something kind of poignant about this, too. The Empire was destroyed some years ago, and he knows Austria probably won't exist much longer, but there he is, defiant, in his uniform. He's brave, but it's a little sad.

other than when he slams the ballroom doors open and stands looking deliciously captain-y, this is my favorite georg shot. i never thought of it as sad. i always thought he looks blissfully happy and perhaps trying to contain himself considering he is watching maria looking so fab in that wedding gown.

Yes, me too, I mean that's always the way I saw it, too. (Although only people who have been tutored by indigo in reading buttoned-up-ness would call that expression "blissful.") I'm just tryin' to keep it interesting by offering an alternative theory. That walled garden is making me mighty melancholy.
I see him as being kind of grave - not that he's not happy, but he knows it's a Big Deal.
I also think it would be interesting to talk more about when they join hands at the altar but I'll save that for another time.

Yes, I think it wasn't done to smile much in those circles, even if you were getting married.
It's my favourite photo too; let's just say he looks devastating - 'nuff said?

Anne, you mentioned you would talk about when they joined hands at the altar - any chance now?!

Well. I chalk it up to the fact that they probably did multiple takes, but it's a little herky-jerky. First he holds his hand out to her as she reaches him at the altar. Then they cut to the nuns. Then back to M&G, now standing separately. She gives her flowers to LIesl and then she reaches for HIS hand (he hesitates for a moment as though he forgot the cue). I wonder if the story is supposed to be that this is all rehearsed and choreographed, or whether it's spontaneous. But I'm probably overthinking FOR A CHANGE. I got married in my parents' backyard, what do I know?

dang. i would never have noticed this if you hadn't said it. it's hard to say if it is spontaneous or not because it is over so darn quickly!!

but it would be quite fine, and lovely, if it were spontaneous. I'm sure that during our ceremony, we were clutching and unclutching hands. Not choreographed. (Our, um, officiant did not believe in rehearsing. "One wedding per couple," he liked to joke).

haha good one. when i told ours the date six months in advance, he said, "oh, so sorry. i think i have a funeral that day." i totally fell for it and panicked.
we held hands during our ceremony but i couldn't tell you if it was premeditated or spontaneous. seriously do not remember. i do remember my groom saying "i do" so loud that it made all the babies in the congregation start to cry at the same time.
anyhoo...
i really need to go and watch the wedding scene again so i can have a real opinion on this.

ok, totally would never have caught the cutaway flub with their hands separated if you hadn't pointed it out. hollywood should hire you to catch those kinds of thing. seriously. as for the hesitation before he takes her hand after that, i don't see it. and again, i never would have thought it strange that she held her hand out to him if you hadn't pointed it out. but now i do.
maybe maria needed his strength and support at that moment. there were a lot of people there. she was probably thankful she didn't trip down the aisle. or maybe her foundation garments were tight and she needed help standing and kneeling. seriously, that could have been a real life reason. "yo chris... wardrobe really welded me into this thing... help a sister out!"

My only contribution is that they DID have several goes at filming it, and apparently the first take was great, everyone coordinated walking up ok, all dressed up,, G&M knelt down and held hands...but...no Bishop!(?Cardinal). Apparently the real head of Mondsee Cathedral insisted on being in the film, but at the vital moment he was nowhere to be seen, and he had to be hauled into position for them to do it all again! You can also see some of his sidekicks in front of the ornate screen before the camera pans up.
So it is quite possible what we see is a combination of several takes (like the rowboat scene when they fall out of the boat).Well-spotted Anne!
PS There are some other people there -any idea who they might be? Time for a fic, I think -shades of Jane Eyre?

All I know is, if he was waiting for me at the altar I'd have broken the speed record for running down the aisle.

demaclean - what do you make of my feeling that this is a little bit poignant? I agree--I think a combination of him knowing what a serious commitment it is, his great love for Maria, and perhaps some memories of his first wedding? That would give it a bit of a melancholy look, and I do think CP is complex enough as an actor to have considered that.

i still think he looks happy. dang it, we're going to have to find a new member that is inclined to agree with me once in a while. i'm in the minority too often. i'm feeling oppressed.
that's right. it's all about me.

LOL---I don't think he looks UNhappy at all. Just that he's got all these other things going on too. CP is just that good.

Yeah, I think he's happy as well, but I also agree with him standing there, in his Austro-Hungarian uniform, having a lot of feelings at the same time.. It's sad really. He's a patriot through and through, and he knows the country he loves will be swiffed off the map a second time in about twenty years (don't get me started on WWI and the events that lead to that, I could write a book about it, if I were to sum up my feelings and what-if theories). I'm quite into that part of history (even though I'm not an Austrian or a Hungarian), but I believe I can say that understand his pain and melancholy.. And totally understand him.
And yes, flashbacks to his first wedding.. Though I don't really believe him to be a man who keeps dwelling in the past that much.. I'm sure he's thinking about Agathe at one point, but when he reaches out to Maria, he's like "I'm one lucky SOB".. Alright not literally but I think you know what I'm trying to say here.. I don't believe he's that sort of man who allows Agathe's ghost to dwell between him and Maria after all.

i agree that he is in the moment. and maria has helped him deal with all the ghosts of his past so he has no need to hold on to anything but her. i do suppose, though, that there were others that may have tried to measure Maria up to Agathe, but real life Maria would probably have cut them down and movie Maria would have won them with her grace.
but this is about the wedding. and the captain looking so handsome. and well... maybe happy isn't the right word. clearly this is a serious moment. content?
i'm out of coffee at the moment. my thoughts are getting a bit muddled today.

Agreed: happy, content.. Happy in a reserved kind of way.. He keeps his emotions in check. It suits his station, and his Naval background, I suppose.

I'm going to pitch in the word 'Proud' to explain that indescribable look on his face; perhaps 'brimming with pride' gets it?
Ah, would he look at me like that...

Proud definitely is there, perfect. And I think lisab1991 has definitely enriched us as well on this point! I have to say that lemacd has totally converted me to that ballroom scene. Watch for references in the walled garden.
