My only contribution is that they DID have several goes at filming it, and apparently the first take was great, everyone coordinated walking up ok, all dressed up,, G&M knelt down and held hands...but...no Bishop!(?Cardinal). Apparently the real head of Mondsee Cathedral insisted on being in the film, but at the vital moment he was nowhere to be seen, and he had to be hauled into position for them to do it all again! You can also see some of his sidekicks in front of the ornate screen before the camera pans up. So it is quite possible what we see is a combination of several takes (like the rowboat scene when they fall out of the boat).Well-spotted Anne! PS There are some other people there -any idea who they might be? Time for a fic, I think -shades of Jane Eyre? Yesss, according to Julie on the Blu-Ray commentary, they had to retake, and the Bishop that married them was a real bishop indeed, so I'm all like 'Their Maria and Georg are legit married', and Julie and Chris kinda too... hehe! Julie and Chris and co. were also giggling throughout 'cos the bishop was known for liking the ladies... XD Such a beautiful scene, defo one of my favourites from the film... he's so incredibly gorgeous in the uniform. omg. ...And Julie looks stunning, absolutely the most beautiful I've ever seen her. The dress is so simple and elegant. The best of Grace Kelly and Kate Middleton and better again...

Yep, mrschrisplummer, I've always wondered about Maria's guests at the wedding - would be a great fic!

Yeahhh, I love that the nuns are there with Maria, but there's no mention to any of her family, etc. throughout... and when Georg asks her if there's anyone he should ask for permission to marry her, she says 'the children'... but wouldn't it be cool if she had a father or someone for Georg to approach and ask... for once, he'd be the intimidated one! XD ...Defo fic material right there... and the wedding itself would lend itself to a fab fic; after the ceremony, the dinner, the dancing afterwards... perhaps a sequel to the party/ball in the film; Landler pt. II, anyone?

Yep, mrschrisplummer, I've always wondered about Maria's guests at the wedding - would be a great fic! I'm finding it hilarious how we are all in each other's heads pretty much all the time. I wondered the exact same thing the other day when I watched the wedding. Obviously the children and Max were on Georg's side but there are a few random extras up near the altar in Maria's side. I wonder who they are (or else just people who just sat there!!). Obviously there are also people on that side as she walks down the aisle too.

Write away mrschrisplummer ! There are a few FF's around where M has a brother. I really like the idea of M having family. Maybe an aunt with whom she can talk to , her feelings about marriage, kissing, men, the children. And I agree with @charleybec we are in each other's mind. Just wrote a little piece about the wedding for J&B. No they are not getting married (yet) but a girl needs to dream.

He looks totally devastating...and anybody would have thought, from your name, MrsChrisPlummer, that YOU were the one at his side at the altar!

dang. i would never have noticed this if you hadn't said it. it's hard to say if it is spontaneous or not because it is over so darn quickly!! They spread their hands because if you pay attention there is another set of stands and she needs to lift her dress so as not to trip over it. After she gives the flowers to Liesl, I don't see that he hesitates to take her hand again, it seems that he is waiting for her to offer it again when she's ready.

I know there's 'Finding Family' by gothicbutterfly (is that the writer?). Then there's the one where she has a brother named Luca (or Lucas?). Other than that, I can't remember any more. If she did have people at the wedding, who do you think they'd be?

If she did have people at the wedding, who do you think they'd be? not sure if this has been discussed before, but I’ve always been so curious as to who the few people standing on Maria’s side of the altar were! There’s only 5, I think, people there, compared to Georg’s side. I like to imagine they were Maria’s friends, and that the Sisters at the Abbey weren’t the only friends she had in the world.

There’s one writer, of course I can’t remember who now, who invented a brother (but not by blood) for Maria named Dominick. He’s in several stories, and definitely at at least one wedding, though it’s not... shall we say... a happy one? There’s also a few stories where she has a girlfriend named Natasha, and I think Natasha might come to the wedding on one, too. 🤔

The first fic I've seen that had him in it was Arrangement, but if I remember correctly, he appears in multiple stories! And right, the circumstances in which he attended the wedding wasn't exactly... happy or ideal :')

My God the wedding... what a wedding. Best on cinema ever. So real, so romantic, so powerful... It is a perfect mix of elegance, solemnity, at the same time simple and familiar, pure feeling and true love. As you have said in a previous post in this thread (sorry im not very good at quoting) as the real archbishop was there in the altar, to me they are "actually married" in fact (both G&M / C&J) LOL I understand that Georg's expression is a bit melancholic (I wouldn't say sad). I like to imagine that it is because of his composure while he tries to control his impulse to run to hug her and cry with joy like a child. I do not think that at that moment, despite wearing the uniform, he is thinking in terms of war or military: it is the emotion of knowing that love has triumphed
