If he said "Dress off" it would be so, in a New York minute. {sigh}
ugh, please excuse me. I had a root canal and am dulling the pain with vodka. carry on.

Thanks. Expanding on your story now. It may get very very dirrrrrty, just as a fair warning.

Dress off, haha! Would fit nicely in a sarcastic wedding night story.. Or whatever. Nightgown, off. You can't sleep in a tent, Fräulein, that simply will not do.
About the pouf: Maybe he's born with it? Because he's worth it? I know those are marketing oneliners for cosmetics, but it does fit him. Betcha his hairdryer is his best friend in the morning..

The pouf was designed to show how uptight and regimented he is, and it slowly flattens out and uses less product until they return from the honeymoon and his luscious locks are au naturel. Then when he goes back into Captain mode for the festival/escape, it comes back, but not as extreme.

LOL, indeed, because yes, I understand WHY the pouf is there, but I don't have to like it. IMHO in the foyer, it doesn't make him look fearsome, and -- Maria's right about this - it certainly doesn't make him look like a sea captain. He looks like he couldn't keep his hands off the, er, product, to quote utility.

well, there you go... maybe it's a secret test for new governesses, to see if they can resist. could explain why number eleven barely lasted two hours.

Oh, I do love you ladies: recently, RL has taken over big time for me and I have had a crap day, with zero Me Time;it's now half past midnight and I just knew I had to get here to make it all better (oops- Gretl's finger creeping in?!) and look! Here I am laughing out loud at your naughtiness and funny quips, and boy, do I feel better!
I think this board should feature in My Favourite Things, although it's difficult to get the metre right...thanks so much, girls for your sense of fun xxx

Oh this thread is just soooo funny! But I mentioned earlier during our movie viewing that I'd had some thought about "I have confidence" I was singing away to it in the car over the weekend (as you do!! lol!!) and I was thinking about the first part (before she goes all silly) and how she is imagining how things will turn out and how they actually turn out. I'll just pick a few of them. "A captain with seven children What's so fearsome about that?" Well when he discovers her in the ballroom, he certainly intimidates her - and it's probably the only time he does so but its interesting that she tries to tell herself there is nothing to be afraid of and her first impression of him is fear (or something close to it) "The courage to serve them with reliance Face my mistakes without defiance" So it's interesting that Maria is quite defiant even though she tells herself she won't be. So firstly she doesn't stay where she is asked to stay when Franz asks her to stay put, then when she gives Georg the mock salute, then the whole thing about whistles are for dogs and cats and other animals, then blowing the whistle back at him, then disobeying orders about bedtime during the thunderstorm, then making play clothes out of drapes and taking the children out and about and climbing tress etc. She is definitely defiant and she makes mistakes!! "So, let them bring on all their problems I'll do better than my best I have confidence they'll put me to the test But I'll make them see I have confidence in me" Well the children definitely do test her, firstly with the frog then the pinecone but she wins over their trust in the end and they do put their confidence in her. "Somehow I will impress them I will be firm but kind And all those children (Heaven bless them!) They will look up to me" Same as above. The children don't instantly take to her as they play the tricks they play on the other governesses but the fact that she doesn't run to Georg and tell on them and she comes to their level earns her their trust etc. Other thoughts about this song?

"So let them bring on all their problems..."
One of the kids' problems is, as Liesl says, that they do not get enough attention from their father; she then puts herself to work resolving all that beautifully.
And...the captain needs a wife!...
-'Nuff said!

a recent thought re: the lyrics and the movie
she has confidence in sunshine (? is this right for some reason my mind won't work and i don't feel like looking it up), rain, spring coming... and in the beginning these are all little reminders that this trip to the von trapp home is only a temporary pause in her quest to become a nun. later, these would be things she has to tell herself when her heart is broken when she hears about the engagement. this is demonstrated by the advice she gives liesl to "cry a little and wait for the sun to come out." (yeah, my 'burden' chapter is still on my brain, can you tell?)
the song is such a great clue to what is in store for her... the disappointment of being sent away is so huge and devastating for postulant Maria but it is nothing compared to what she's to face as a woman in love. and yet, the way to cope is essentially the same; have confidence.

Good stuff. Also---'strength doesn't lie in numbers, strength doesn't lie in wealth'---she'll be darned if those seven kids or that wealthy sea captain (or especially a widowed baroness who's husband left her a terrible fortune!) will get her down. She's got confidence!

This IS a brilliant thread but really, what sense do you make of, "strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber?"

This IS a brilliant thread but really, what sense do you make of, "strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber?" Well I always feel better (and stronger) in the morning after a good nights sleep (but with having 3 kids, that rarely happens) But didn't Julie Andrews once say that she found those lyrics very confusing and they didn't make sense at all so she made Maria, when singing it, appear quite bumbling around with hyped confusion (or something like that)

This IS a brilliant thread but really, what sense do you make of, "strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber?" I must say I was always curious about that one too... Maybe she means it in a more literal way, like being able to sleep through the night in order to stay healthy and strong? And having peace of mind of course. Oh, I have no clue, I'll leave you to you guys to give a better response.

What about, if you feel strong you are able to sleep well, without tossing and turning with anxiety??

"... Nights of peaceful slumber..." This always struck me as a very nun-like thing to believe in. Like, good clean living.
It is a bit of nonsense. But it's that kind of simple way of considering life that concerns RM about Maria; she wants Maria to understand that life isn't simple, even for a nun.
Or something.

Well, first of all, this thread is hilarious!
Second, I was wondering why we don't hear "I Have Confidence" any other time except when Maria sings it. Every other song has a reprise, or is included in the overture, or is included in the intermission, or is in some combination of these. Even a song from the play makes an appearance as orchestra music during the party. Why no love for "I Have Confidence"?

I think I hear a bit of it during the confrontation scene with Herr Zeller outside the villa. Just when they’re getting into the car, Maria and Georg share a look. I can hear a bit instrumentally, the part where Maria sings, “What will this day be like? I wonder. What will my future be?”
