Some people think that the lyrics to this song are purposefully nonsensical, to suggest that Maria is in a panic. (I heard this in an interview with JA, so it might actually be true). "Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber, when you wake up, wake up! it's healthy! All I trust I leave my heart to, etc." Do you agree?

no, i don't. right before she sings this song, she says "when God closes a door, somewhere He opens a window." i think this song is about believing this to be true. ('with each step i am more certain everything will turn out fine' and 'i have confidence that spring will come again' etc). She's nervous and working up the courage. We all do that.
i think it is a great song and i am glad that some stage versions include it. it transitions her from begging the RM not to send her away to 'here i am! i'm from the convent! i'm the new governess, captain!'

I agree with lemacd that it's about Maria trying to believe that it will be ok, but I think there's a reason behind that needing to happen, which is the fact that she is a little panicked.

yes, maybe I was reacting just as much to the way her voice sounds a little panicked.

yes, i agree. i just failed to mention it in my answer.
it helps us see, too, why she is able to be so happy and refreshingly positive, why the negative energy of the household didn't bring her down. even panicked, she knows how to pick herself up. before the song, she was quite despondent about leaving the abbey and with the exception of the 'oh help' moment, she is quite determined by the time she rings the doorbell and faces the franzinator.
that confidence enables her to: take on the children's pranks, lie for liesl, ask for play clothes, make play clothes out of drapes (that's pretty ballsy, i think), rip him one after the row boat incident... it goes on and on. if we were to think she just is always that way, she's a simpleton, not a brave and wonderful character that gets our admiration and eternal love.
or maybe not. it's 6:30 am. i'm not used to thinking this early in the morning.

Everything lemacd just said.
And yes, pretty much everything she does is ballsy, from telling him that whistles are humiliating and then whistling to ask what his signal is. And then turning those innocent blue eyes on him.
I remember that interview, and I believe it was in the context of how in the world to sing those nonsensical lines, and I think Wise was the one who told her about the nervous/panicky thing, and then it worked. That's why he kept her stumble after she goes through the gates in the final cut, too.

i thought of the whole whistle thing after i posted my comment. glad you mentioned it. and yet she didn't kick elsa in the teeth. just didn't have a clean shot, i'm guessing.

She's ballsy, not violent. And all that about setting a good example for the children stuff.

In my very early developing thoughts about M&G's more, er, adult story, I think I have decided that it's that whistle moment when he knows he's got to have her. "You haven't told me your signal." He fights it, to no avail.

i can totally see what you mean... and despite his ire at dinner and during the thunderstorm, he had to suspect that she was, to quote utility's lovely vienna story, 'a force of nature'. it had to be refreshing. elsa would never have blown that whistle at him like that. her harmonica, maybe. but that would have just sounded pathetic and weird.

I think THAT should have been when he said he first started falling in love with her. "When you blew that silly whistle". Because the look he gives her when he turns around is smokin' and not in an angry way. ;-) And you just know he's loving that challenge.
Elsa's too easy. In every way.

doh. but then it would have been, "i knew when you blew that silly whistle." and she says, "i knew when you blew that silly whistle." "so we both like whistles." "i guess so. maybe we should become the trapp family whistlers." "i will NOT have my children whistle in public!"
i got carried away. i'm not well, i think.

you are better than well. as we know, it is idiotic for her to say that she loved him when he blew the whistle. (if anything: G: do you know when I first fell in love with you? when you blew that silly whistle at me. M: and when you turned around ? That's when I knew.
But also - let's pick a better moment for her to figure it out about him. A ridiculously early moment. Like "hat off."

How about the 'Hat. Off.' Surely her knees started buckling at that very moment.. At least mine did.

I'm good with either one, but I think hers was likely when she first got a clear look at his face. Her face lights up and when he asks, "Why do you look at me that way?" Yeah, that was it. "You look nothing like a sea captain, sir." She was hooked.

I remember watching the anime series, when Maria first heard about the Captain; She envisioned a supersweet cartoon submarine and a roughly bearded sailor. In comparison to that, Georg surely looked like a fluffy bunny. Or a duckling. Yeah, she liked what she saw.

the first time she sees his face is closely related to the ballroom door slam, so... i'm in.

Just love this... Talking of which, I have just noticed in this photo how sculpted his hair is compared to later in the film: he looks like a Japanese Geisha Girl!! Not sure what Maria made of that...

maybe she thought... "now there is a man who is in desperate needs of female fingers messing up his hair. oh, my... where did that come from? i'm here on God's errand! good things i'm wearing clothes the poor don't want... it's my only defense right now. but if he asks me to take my hat off, i'm done for."

sorry to go backward for a moment - I've been busy -- but I just want to say that the hair-pouf in this scene is SO annoying that I can barely appreciate the smokingness of the look. He looks like he has one of those "bump" things. Wait, what? (I think we went down this road before).
Dress off. Hee Hee. Now we know why all those other governesses left. THey were completely unable to maintain discipline.
