Back when I had tumblr, one of my favourite things memes was the genreswap. When avoiding revision this meme came flashing back to me and I thought I'd give it a go with a certain movie with which I'm currently/permanently obsessed. This one is The Sound of Music as a romantic comedy. If you like this (and I hope you do) throw another genre out there; I'm always on the lookout for things to distract me whilst simultaneously making me feel productive!

Can someone explain this to me? I've seen the 'horror' video (of Mary Poppins I think, but not TSOM), but the collage of photos just doesn't make sense as a romantic comedy. Is there some trick to looking at it?

It's difficult to explain a genreswap much beyond "it's in the name", but indeed I probably should have elaborated a bit utility_singer! I'd say I suppose you have to suspend what you know about the screencaps and the scenes they are part of, at least to some degree. Just browsing tumblr I found some which I hope explains it. This one is Harry Potter as a sitcom; in the third picture on the left Harry and Ron in the film are trying to avoid being hit by a train, but in a genreswap you just take the images more at face value. Friends as a horror/psychological thriller and 30 Rock as a drama are another couple I liked (and if anyone has seen 30 Rock, you'll know that scenes between Alec Baldwin and Will Arnett are the opposite of dramatic). Granted I haven't done it anywhere near as well as these, but I hope this makes some sense at least!

I'd love to try my hand at this, thank you for educating me/us, @blueaugen. It might not be for a while but I'm definitely interested!
