So I haven't looked far enough down to see if there is one of these already but I figured it might be nice to have a place to talk about other favourite musicals as well as TSOM??? Basically I just found out that one of my favourite musical theatre actors of all time is starring in Grease Live which is airing in the UK on Wednesday and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it and I just wanted people to hype with because my friends just do not get it. Oh well.
What other musicals do you like? Mine: Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Miss Saigon, The Lion King, A Little Princess, Billy Elliott, Grease, Hairspray.....my list could go on forever <3 xoxox

Oooh! I think my "musicals" signal went off! My favourites are (in no particular order): -Les Misérables -My Fair Lady -Cinderella -Carousel -The King and I -Phantom of the Opera (only for the music...I had an irrational fear of the musical itself since I was a child, don't ask me why ) -Beauty and the Beast -Hairspray -West Side Story -Mary Poppins -The Wizard of Oz Speaking about Grease, did anyone watch Grease Live on Sunday night? It was fantastic! I was quite surprised by Julianne Hough's singing and acting chops! I know you can't really compare it to TSOM Live because the nature of the two musicals are so different but the production quality for Grease is way better, in my opinion.

I'm an old fashioned girl, so I really love the Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lerner & Loewe shows. Sondheim is also wonderful. My list fluctuates quite a bit but for the most part: My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, 1776, West Side Story, Evita, Carousel, Camelot, The King and I, Brigadoon, Into the Woods.
More recently I really, really love the score to Wicked, and I just saw Something Rotten, which is perhaps the funniest show I've ever seen. Very clever and bawdy lyrics.
I watched Grease live, it was too much like the movie; a lot of mugging for the camera, and too many things took me out of the setting. I won't say more in case some haven't seen it yet.

I'm with you utility, I like mostly older classics. on top of those though I do like somewhat more recent things like phantom, wicked, thoroughly modern millie stage version (which is substantially different than the julie film and worth a try if you haven't listened/seen - I love both), catch me if you can. et cetera. I'm not super picky

I'm mainly looking forward to Grease Live cause Aaron Tveit's in it. I love all these long lists - most musicals I've heard of/seen have been excellent. How did you all here get into musical music cause I feel at school there's this divide between the musical theatre geeks and then the rest of the world which is really sad!!!

While I can enjoy musicals. I'm not really a big fan of them. Other than SOM, I like Victor/Victoria and Sweeney Todd and that's about it.

My musical film list is probably too long to list (If there's singing I will most likely enjoy it) Actual musicals that I've seen I would order like this; 1. WICKED 2. The Sound of Music 3. Legally Blonde the Musical 4. Grease 5. Mamma Mia 6. Hairspray 7. Dirty Dancing 8. Annie 9. Mary Poppins 10. Love Never Dies (Phantom's sequel)

How did you all here get into musical music cause I feel at school there's this divide between the musical theatre geeks and then the rest of the world which is really sad!!! It was my mom who introduced me to all these musicals. She said that all of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein movies would be on TV when she was a kid. And she's from a big city so she got to see all of the mega musicals like Phantom, Les Mis, Show Boat, and Joseph when they first came out. And then I caught the musical bug! Lol we have soundtracks to so many musicals it's not even funny. Even to ones that she nor I have never seen. Our DVD shelf is lined up with musicals arranged from A-Z...yes, we have more musical DVDs than movie DVDs! Among our collection of musical DVDs, we have the famous ones (the R&H box set, The Wizard of Oz, Phantom), some newer ones (Mamma Mia, Across the Universe (does that even count?!)), and the lesser known ones (An American in Paris, On the Town). And should I mention that I have sheet music to musicals? Where do I even begin... I don't talk about musicals to my friends because I assume that they know nothing about them! As well, there's a part of me deep down under that is too embarrassed to tell others that I am a musical fanatic. Also, I have a ton of songs from musicals on my iPod. Sometimes it gets a bit awkward listening to those on public transit. Even though no one else can hear what I'm listening to, there are parts in the songs where there's dialogue or shouting or swearing (like any typical musical song) and sometimes it feels strange listening to those bits. Nonetheless, I still love musical songs

I love them all, R&H, L&L and so on, plus the newer ones like Les Miz and Wicked and Lion King (these last two are tied up in memories of my children - the first shows we took them to, the songs they sang in school chorus). Others I remember from my childhood are Oliver, Music Man, How to Succeed in Business, I still think MFL and King and I might be my favorites.

It's no secret that I adore Phantom of the Opera (my username is a lyric from it). It's sort of what got me really into musicals, and it's the only musical that can top TSOM for me. But I also like Les Mis, Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Elisabeth das Musical, Newsies, Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, Into the Woods, Cabaret, Bonnie and Clyde, Evita, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Assassins, Fiddler on the Roof...I'll go ahead and stop there lol. My taste in musicals is sort of all over the place, but if it's catchy enough I'll probably be into it.

How did I get started? I was in an enrichment class in fourth grade and the teacher took us to see The Wiz. It was my first Broadway show, and I was mesmerized, though I don't like the show itself.
The first show I ever performed in was The King and I, I was in eighth grade and part of the chorus/ensemble. I was completely hooked, and from then until I graduated appeared in every musical and play the school put on. I did summer youth theater for several years in high school and college, a couple of musicals while in college, and then when I was working/married/had little kids took a break.
My first show in ten years was Mary Poppins, which I did in December playing Miss Andrew. Tonight I just got the call that I've been cast in Oliver!, as the Widow Corney, which plays weekends in April, so I'll be busy again in a few weeks.
Oh, and my older daughter has the bug too, she's in her school's production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

TSOM, Les Mis, South Pacific (that was a huge phase... don't ask, still like it but not as much as i once did), the music man... i was in Cabaret in high school so i have a soft spot for that one though it is kinda... i dunno. i remember seeing Annie when i was a kid and i loved the music, sang it a lot to the point my parents forbid it outside my bedroom. um... yeah.

Caberet in high school? (LOL spellcheck made it "cabernet,") that seems like it would be a difficult show to do at that age, but maybe they show isn't as racy as the film. I'm interested in what a SP phase would feel like...

Slightly O/T but my favorite song from a musical (sorry, TSOM) is, "if they asked me, I could write a book" from Pal Joey. I wrote a TSOM FIC about it I loved it so much. Other songs people love more than the show they're in?

Well we didn't have homosexual overtones like the movie, but there was the issue of abortion which I recall thinking was quite risky even in 1987 (wow... I'm old) and of course it was Berlin in the 30s, not exactly a fun time depending who you were. I remember our director begged us not to watch the movie as it wasn't the version we were doing. So, of course we did.
In answer to your question, hmmmmm 'Bring Him Home' is almost spiritual to me when I listen to Les Mis. Love that song so much. But love songs... Don't think I have one.
And I can't explain SP. I think I have a shipping type, older man (preferably with kids, it seems) and younger woman who is too naive for her own good sometimes. For real this pattern keeps happening to me.

I don't enjoy carousel as a whole nearly as much as I enjoy its music, if that's what augiesannie is asking. on the opposite end of the spectrum, the soundtrack to gentleman's guide is 100% not worth listening to if you aren't watching as well, save for maybe two songs.

I was in a local production of Annie when I was in 7th grade. I played Pepper. I remember going around singing and dancing it for weeks. These days I'm much more comfortable in the pit.

That reminds me, @clarinetjamie, of a time when I went to see a high school production of My Fair Lady. I was 12 at the time. And it wasn't just any high school. It was a specialty arts school. I was pretty much blown away by the entire production. I looked down at the orchestra pit and spotted the one and only flutist in the orchestra. Entering a state of awe, I thought to myself, "One day, I will be just like her, playing the flute in the orchestra pit for a musical. Or maybe I'll be up on stage singing my heart out." Yeah, dream big, kid. Never happened.

Bring Him Home is quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. As for other songs, Home from The Wiz is one that I love but don't really like the show itself. I'm sure there are many others that I just can't think of at the moment.

In response to spiritual songs from musicals, the one that gets me the most is "You'll Never Walk Alone". Several months ago, I was singing it while playing the accompaniment on the piano and I nearly choked up in tears. Watching the actors sing it live on stage makes you want to cry your eyes out, especially since the main character stops mid-way through, only to break down into tears. These spiritual musical songs like "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", and "Bring Him Home" can very well stand alone. Musical songs deserve more credit!

Echo the favourites of many of you!
Currently, the songs I have on repeat include: - Gold Can Turn to Sand --> from Kristina - which I've never seen and never even knew existed until I listened to Josh Groban's album Stages (which, by the way, is fantastic) - The Hardest Part of Love --> from Children of Eden (same composer as Wicked), a play I did back in high school, which I never fully appreciated until I became a parent and now it totally gets me every time

LOL not many people have seen Hamilton yet, I keep trying to get tickets but they sell out as fast as they are released, and I'm not willing to pay double face value (or more!). Sold out a year in advance at this point.

As for songs Why God Why from Miss Saigon is gorgeous and I completely agree about the lovely spiritual ones (I'd Give My Life For You from Miss Saigon is also incredible and so sad when you know how the play pans out). I discovered that about a year ago and wanted to sing all the songs all the time but a lot of them are so rude so I don't think my teachers would have been very happy about me bellowing them around school. Saigon closed in London today *sobs*. My friend has recommended Hamilton to me, so I'm going to give it a try bluesatinsashes my dad was the one who got me into Les Mis (played Come to Me (Fantine's Death) on his record player when I was seven and I was completely hooked from then on in), and then it went downhill from there I know, my friends don't really understand why I listen to musical theatre so much and why I get so emotional about the plays - I cry so much - but I don't know, lots of them are just so touching. My absolute favourite song from a musical has to be Do You Hear the People Sing (especially in French. It's really cool in French )

My absolute favourite song from a musical has to be Do You Hear the People Sing (especially in French. It's really cool in French ) Yes! I have songs from Miss Saigon on my iPod. My mom has the original London cast recording. I love Lea Salonga's voice to pieces. I have never seen the musical before and I would see it in a heartbeat if it were to come to town. The first time I saw Les Mis in its entirety was the 25th anniversary concert version at the O2 Centre broadcasted on PBS. Never have I seen anything that rocked my world like that (ok, maybe TSOM, but in a different way). I could not get it off my mind for several days--a sure sign that it was incredibly moving! Actually, wait a sec, my mom went to see Les Mis a couple of decades ago when she was pregnant with me. So really, the first time I "saw" it/"heard" Les Mis was in utero! Maybe that's why I'm so attached it! Ooh good thread! Mine are (not in any particular order and besides TSOM): Singing in the Rain Music Man (my cousin and I have the whole Trouble song memorized ) King and I Carousel South Pacific Phantom of the Opera Les Mis Hamilton (I hate to admit I've never seen it but the music is FANTASTIC) Lol I have the whole Trouble song memorized too. Love it! With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool! Maybe you've heard of this before, but the Simpsons Monorail episode made a reference to that song: Seth MacFarlane does his own take of it too (and nails it of course!)

And The Music Man. And Mary Poppins, just to name a few.

My spotify playlist is full of musical show tunes! I haven't really watched all of them but show tunes from all these musicals are my go-to music.
Other than TSOM, these are some of the musicals I enjoy: - Anything Julie Andrews (esp. Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Cinderella!) - The King and I (discovered it through Julie's recording) - Wicked (Probably has the most number of favourite songs after TSOM. "For Good" and "I'm Not That Girl" always puts me to tears.) - Les Mis - Phantom of the Opera - Grease - The Last Five Years - Rent (Seasons of Love is my anthem)
