There's also some hint of disbelief/pleading in the way Louisa says it---almost a 'please why is he doing this help us get rid of her' sort of way. I've thought this too, and she does that little confirmatory nod, like, "yes, I know, it's hard to believe and my father is an idiot".

They may have been secretly relieved with Maria's confused reaction, since they themselves are very confused by the news (and all of the other adults are pretending that it is wonderful). They are probably happy to have someone else (especially a parent figure that they know and trust) on their side to talk to about the situation.
Little do they know that Maria is the most shocked and hurt of the group.

What are Louisa and Friedrich thinking when Maria says "Oh, I see."? Attachments:

Louisa is saying "Isn't it awful, and would you believe it?" and looking for a response, but Friedrich has seen Maria's reaction and is taken aback by it.
Maybe it is the first time that it has dawned on him that Maria cares about his father?

Just before the "I have so much to tell you all" line, as they are walking along the path, Maria glances towards the house. Who is she looking for? The captain, so they can sort things out? The baroness, in case she has to make a quick excuse to go inside given the awkwardness of their last chat? Max's friendly face? I think the captain. Though, is she hoping to see him or hoping to continue avoiding him (for now)?

Her problem is that she returned on the assumption that Georg was still keen on her, and was returning to see whether he was keen enough to commit himself to her. However, the kids tell her he has committed himself to Elsa, so suddenly Maria realises she has made a big booboo, and isn't welcome there (by those two).
I think she glances up to check Elsa isn't there, because if she was, that would mean she ought to scarper (as she hasn't even arrived by the usual route via the front door, so is sort-of trespassing both physically and psychologically). Maybe she is also looking for a glimpse of Georg on his own, to check whether he has really changed his mind about her...and then, he's there!
So why did she enter by the garden route? What if the kids weren't there?

Good points. Though her (first) glance is before the kids tell her of the engagement. I'm assuming she is looking for Georg, but I haven't decided if she wanted to see him or didn't want to see him.
As for why she didn't go through the front door, that's a good question. To avoid being made to wait in the hall while Franz summoned the captain when she wasn't sure what to say to him yet? If the kids weren't there, she'd have to go back around to the front, right? I mean, she doesn't live there anymore. She couldn't just go strolling in the back door and back up to her old room. I wonder how long she would have waited out on the terrace hoping the children (or Max) would be the first ones out the back door to be her buffer.

Perhaps she heard the children singing and followed the sound to the back of the house.

Perhaps she heard the children singing and followed the sound to the back of the house. this makes the most sense to me. To choose to go around back without a reason like this, would have increased the risk of running into Georg without having the upper hand of Franz announcing her, or Elsa, or both of them (presumably even though she doesn't know they are engaged, she expects that Elsa is still hanging around?)

It also from a drama standpoint adds to the intensity of the scene to have Georg go outside and discover for himself that she has returned rather than going through the front door and being announced by Franz.
I often wonder how much of the conversation Georg heard and observed before she and they kids noticed him standing at the top of the stairs. He had to have been standing there long enough to see her reaction to the news that he was engaged. I always thought he looked so handsome in this scene (not that he doesn't in any of the other scenes, lol).

I agree with clarinetjamie, I love the idea that he has seen her face fall at the news. It has to have set his mind racing and given him at least some confidence that he should approach her (after honorably releasing Elsa, and not that he isn't nervous). I wonder how it would play differently if he hadn't witnessed Maria learning the news if he hadn't known Maria knows until she offers he congratulations. That might explain the sick look on his face ....

I really like that Maria is the first one to start running once the children realize she's back. I'm sure she really did miss them.
From their perspective, the relief of this moment must have been overwhelming too. I wonder who missed who more.

From their perspective, the relief of this moment must have been overwhelming too. I wonder who missed who more. I think it might be a tie on who missed who more... On one hand, Maria missed both the kids and Georg, but on the other hand, the kids missed Maria and had to deal with the prospect of Elsa as their new stepmother -- which wouldn't have been fun for anyone involved. I also always loved that Louisa was the first one to run to her. She's kind of "the enigmatic one," so it's really sweet to see her be so open with her love for Maria.
