Have any of you ever read a fanfiction that changed your perception of the film? I read a lot that, at the time, I think will. But then I go watch the film and find that they really don't, even if I do think about them. There are only two that have truly changed my perception of the film, The Turquoise Dress was one. Without giving away the story for those who haven't read it, I'll just say this went so deep for me it even extended to the stage version. The other was nicky's Between the Lines. This is to lesser extent, since it's AU, but the book Brigitta is reading will forever be 'the book he dare not return without'. Ramble over, and back to my original question. Have you had this experience?

Thanks for including my story, I'm so glad that it made an impression on you. It is without doubt the story that I've most enjoyed writing. As for any that have changed my impression of the film, I'm not sure, I'll have to think about that but there are many that have certainly made me wish that CP and JA were still in their 20s and 30s and able to film some of these alternative versions of the film, particularly the... ahem M rated ones romantic ones!

I don't know that there are any that changed my impression of the film, but there are definitely some that I've read so many times that my brain just expects those circumstances to happen and then when the movie goes along as it always has, there's a brief moment of DARN THAT WAS FANFIC, NOT REAL.

i can't say that i can name one in particular that altered my perception of the film... but i can say that many have helped me notice things i hadn't before, or defined a look one of the actors gave the other or reinterpret a line. for example, the convo between elsa and georg before maria and the children show up in the boat has always stumped me a bit. i mean, i understand the general point of the conversation (i think) but there is a line here or there that just... what do they mean? anyway, my point (and i do have one) is that reading fanfic has helped me plod through the moments that maybe weren't relevant to me when i watched it as a kid but have certainly brought out the layers now that i'm older. and wiser. at least one of those, anyway. now that i've said all that, i would probably say that the last chapter of augiesannie's honeymoon story is still hall of fame in my book and brought a part of maria to life for me that i think has gone on to affect how i write her. if you haven't read it, you should.

This happens to me all the time! I will be reading a story and the author will do something clever or give their own personal insight into a character or a scene and I have to pick my jaw up off the table because it was just brilliant! It's one of the main reasons that I love fanfic so very much, the chance to right the wrongs and fill in the blanks and give depth to characters who don't get enough screen time! I second the vote for augiesannie Honeymoon story...sigh! I also love her Worth any Price, it changed the way I looked at Elsa forever, in the very best way. And I have to confess that while I love the SOM I didn't know nearly as much as most of you ladies about CP before I joined up around here. When I read charleybec's Music to My Ears I loved it but didn't know that CP actually played the piano quite so well in real life and it has become part of my Captain Head Cannon from then on! I never really envisioned the Captain as playful per say until I read this oldie but goodie back when I first got into SOM, Summertime. After that I never really looked at him quite the same when he would quirk his eyebrow and try to look stern. And they aren't always serious...one of my favorite stories is lemacd's Sister Berthe" the Fun Nun, I cannot watch the movie without imagining her character a little bit differently Besides, isn't she everyone's favorite nun? Gah! I could do this for hours, lucky for me all of you are so talented!

Of course. Sister Berthe is definitely my favourite nun. And yes, in my headcanon Georg is a great pianist because of Christopher Plummer. That happens sometimes with Julie as well (my Maria loves violets)

This was a brilliant question, gothicbutterfly95. I am afraid my brain is exploding at the thought of all my favorite fics so I can't think of any to single out, at least not without thinking about it.

What a great question and thread - I think about this "concept" a lot when I'm reading fan fiction!
For me, "Worth Any Price" by augiesannie (already mentioned) and "How to Stalk A Nun" by lemacd have somehow worked themselves into the movie.
