I was reading an article in the paper about this natty roadster, thinking how nice it would be if I owned one. It was built by Mercedes Benz around 1936 (342 were made, only 29 in this Roadster version), with a 5 litre engine and top speed of 100mph. This one was stolen from its German owners in the confusion at the end of WW2, and shipped out to America. It's now been sent back to the original owners, and is up for auction at a pretty price. But the more I looked at it, the more I realised that (I think) it is our Captain's car - in Roadster version- I seem to remember that too was a Mercedes 500K like this, but I cannot find the post that we have on this board detailing such things. Can anyone find it? Gee, that man had taste...

His car was a Mercedes Benz W142 type 320 Cabriolet D. The cars were built between 1937 and 1942. Pretty awesome cars though and definitely classy for their time (and ours too, really). If you want to buy one it could set you back as much as $500,000 into the $600,000 range. That's the median price of a house where I live, lol. Guess I won't ever own one in my lifetime.

Wow! Thanks for the details! The paper I was reading says the price tag for this one (with its history) is £6 million ($8m to you over the water).
Somehow I don't think it will ever be mine...drive on Capt von Trapp...
