I'm not sure what you might be referring to, but in the real-life books they observe Advent, and Christmas of course, and Lent, and Easter. I don't recall how much emphasis there was on presents. Obviously no electronics! Books? Dolls? Games? Clothes? I think in general people were less abundant about presents then...

I do recall in her book Maria recalled being told that when Georg returned home from his escapes from the children he would bring gifts for them.

I have an idea that in Austria, for small presents to one another, it was common to bake biscuits and then decorate them and tie them with a strand of ribbon.
