Hi everyone! So I'm a part of this powerful women in society program and at every meeting one of the leaders gets to open up the meeting with briefly telling the group about an inspirational woman, etc, which is a super fun way to get to know a lot of amazing women and inspire others. So my last two ones were on Malala Yousafzai and Angela Merkel, and for this next mtg it was decided that I could present about Julie Andrews ((:
So, since you all are quite the experts, I thought I'd ask if you had anything you think would be great for me to include about Julie since I might forget/not know some cool things about her that you guys may know. Also, if you know of a short youtube clip or something that you think would be neat to show (like under 5 mins) then please let me know!! Thanks!

Things I find inspirational about Julie are that she came from a background which would not be described as privileged or easy, and yet she has managed to propel herself to the heights of her profession. But at the same time she is always courteous and thoughtful, honest and caring (I believe she adopted 3 kids?), which alone is impressive.
I'm sure others will have more to say, but that is an important backdrop to all else that she has done. Good luck!

She's also very big with humanitarian work and a huge advocate for the arts. But yes, everything that's been said above.
Honestly it's so hard for me to explain why she's so loverly.

Also, if you know of a short youtube clip or something that you think would be neat to show (like under 5 mins) then please let me know!! Thanks! Ooh! Ooh! I could go on all day about this. I know the following two videos are too long to show at your meeting, but you can take a look and pick out any info that stands out to you and discuss it: This is a quick bio that was shown at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2001: After reading her memoir, "Home" earlier this year, as much as I was in awe of her success, I was quite stunned by the numerous adversities she has faced (since her memoir covers her life from birth to moving to the USA for Mary Poppins, we've only seen the adversities until then...we know she has faced many more afterward). To name a few, she grew up during the WW2 where it became routine to hide in the basement or bomb shelter upon hearing a warning siren, her parents' divorce, her stepfather who later became alcoholic and abusive, and learning at age 14 that her father was not her biological one. Sounds crazy to read all this in one sentence, right? It simply amazes me how a person can face such pain and hardships and stay together in one piece and move on as an extraordinarily beautiful, generous, hard-working, multi-talented, and successful individual. Hope this helps. Good luck at the meeting!

Thanks guys!!!
In case you're interested, here's the brief overview of the notes for what I decided to include ((:
--This month is Julie Andrews’ birth month; she was born on October 1st
--Julie Andrews was born in England in 1935
--She grew up with a step-dad who was an alcoholic and abusive but she had a four-octave voice and became the star of their family’s stage acts in Vaudeville --Her singing voice was first recognized when she would sing, when she was under the age of 10, in bomb shelters during air raids of WWII.
--At age 13 she was the youngest person to ever sing for the royal family
--At age fifteen she dropped out of school to pursue singing and acting – even though she didn’t graduate from high school, eventually she was awarded honorary degrees for many universities including Yale.
--She starred in her first broadway show at age 19 and went on to star in four more Broadway shows
--She was in over 30 movies; the Sound of Music is one of the most-loved movies of all time and it won best picture
--Earlier she had starred in Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which on one night had 100 million views in the 1950s.
--Walt Disney himself viewed Julie Andrews as so important that when he asked her to play the role of Mary Poppins, she declined because she was pregnant, but he told her he would wait for her, which was unprecedented in the film industry. He waited, and they made Mary Poppins after her daughter was born, and Julie Andrews won best actress for it. Mary Poppins is the biggest box-office draw in Disney History.
--She had her own TV show called the Julie Andrews Hour
--She was nominated for tony’s, won multiple golden globes, multiple emmys, academy awards, grammy’s, lifetime achievement awards, and was a Kennedy Center Honoree
--For her services to the arts, Julie was awarded the title of Dame, dame commander of the british empire, by Queen Elizabeth herself
--A huge advocate of children’s and women’s rights; she did a lot during the Vietnam war and even adopted two daughters from Vietnam
--she has served as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women which assists women and their communities in impoverished countries
--Right now, she is currently directing My Fair Lady at the Sydney Opera House and has continuously helped rising artists
--She is on of the list of 100 Greatest British people, behind Winston Churchill, William Shakespeare, Princess Diana, King Arthur, and Queen Elizabeth
Things I find most incredible about her:
--She came from a background that was not easy, growing up with little money and an abusive step-father but has still managed to propel herself to the heights of her profession
--Her singing career, something that truly defined her, ended about 16 years ago in a throat operation that went horribly wrong; she couldn’t sing again. Yet despite this monumental setback, she decided to use her voice to spread happiness to others in a different way. She began writing books. Her autobiography was a New York Times #1 Bestseller and she also published 11 other children’s books, which also topped bestseller lists, because she is a huge advocate of child literacy.
--Despite her adversities, she is almost never seen without a smile on her face - clearly her joy, resilience, and hard work have made her an amazing icon who I look up to and aspire to emulate every day.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.
And, just skimming over the notes you have I learnt something; I did not know she'd been awarded honorary degrees. GO JULIE! For Everything
