My question more pertains to the musical version than the film, but...
(In the musical), when the Reverend Mother tells Maria she's being sent off to the von Trapps, she asks if 'the dress she wore when she first came' is still there. But when Georg asks her about it, she says 'it belonged to our last postulant'. That seems like an overly complex way to describe yourself, and that being the case, doesn't seem needed. But if it belong to the last postulant, why was she wearing it when she first arrived?
I imagine it's just contradictory writing, but I wanted to see what you all thought.
Also, where did you think she got the dress (this can be the movie). I've read stories where she grabbed it out of the robing room before leaving, but from the very beginning, I always thought it was her own dress. What about you?

Regarding the second part of your post, do you mean the dark skirt and jacket she first wore to the Villa? They fit her so well I can only thing they were hers!
But the green dress she wears back to the villa we see on the new postulant just before Maria comes in to see the Rev Mother- but maybe you aren't referring to this if it isn't the same in the musical?

No I was referring to her first outfit. The green one was definitely belonged to the new postulant.

Although I appreciate the fabrics used in her first set of clothes weren't very flattering, Julie's figure is so amazing that she still manages to look pretty striking in them! No surprise Capt von T couldn't take his eyes off her!
Another thing I have wondered about is that when she sits down to dinner with them on the first night, she wears a prominent cross around her neck. Afterwards, this is not to be seen; is this because she doesn't want to 'ward him off', or maybe because she was having a few doubts herself, or for other reasons like 'it didn't go with her more flattering outfits' ?

As for the ill-fitting clothing she first arrives at the villa in, it has always been my understanding that the clothing postulants arrive in go into a communal closet, and those leaving the abbey chose from that closet for something that fits well enough, and the rest get cleared out periodically and given to the poor. Her comment, "the poor didn't want this one" makes sense in this context.
The cross we see her wearing at dinner is rather large and impractical for an active young woman looking after 7 children, so that is probably why we don't see it. I wrote a little one shot with my idea of what happens to it.

We were talking about this dress over in the "you don't look at all like a sea captain" thread in movie observations, and I'm not sure why I just can't let it go. Is it really THAT ugly? Franz certainly looks down at her clothes disapprovingly, the captain insists that she change, and children comment on it. But I just see a plain dress and jacket made of heavy material. It isn't falling apart or anything, and it fits her fine. Why is it seen by everyone as so shockingly ugly? The cross has always puzzled me as well. Where did she get it? We don't see her wearing it at the abbey. RM is the only one with a cross necklace there. Maybe RM wanted her wear this when she was out in the world to let everyone know that she was a woman of God? Though, then she would have been wearing it on her journey to the villa. Maybe it was her way of distracting everyone from looking at her ugly dress at dinner? Attachments:

If you notice what other dresses women wear later on, I think it is obvious why this dress is the ugliest one for a young girl like Maria who is going to work as governess for the 7 children of an aristocrat. It is dark and gloomy, with heavy stiff fabric, thick and rough, probably handmade and seems coarse in texture. It seems ugly and unacceptable to their social rank like the kids' clothes made from old curtains. About the cross, it seems also handmade, maybe it was a present from the abbey, maybe Maria made it herself. I believe she kept the cross for a special occasion and that is why she wore it at the dinner, and not on the road going to the villa, for some colour on that dull material.

I've always thought that the cross was either one of her family heirlooms (her mother's, perhaps?) or, like emilia78 said, handmade by Maria.

I must say, CP does look pretty porky in that last screencap in the hall - he could do with a new suit!
So much for him saying Maria needed new clothes...

I must say, CP does look pretty porky in that last screencap in the hall - he could do with a new suit! So much for him saying Maria needed new clothes... One of my guilty pleasures is finding which scenes were shot after he gained like 30 pounds. CP admitted to being miserable, eating and “soaking himself in champagne” during the filming...they had to let out his outfits several times. When he walks with Elsa upon her arrival to the villa you can see his still in shape. When Maria arrives back from the abbey you can see it was during his weight gain. But still handsome. More to love.
