My mind has wandered around to this subject quite often, so let's have it up for discussion....
Given that Georg was a man with seven children, how do you think he would have approached Maria, a spinster (who was intending to spend the rest of her life in a convent with no obvious opportunity for... fun) on their wedding night and subsequent days on their honeymoon?

Put it this way...do you think he might have taken things on their wedding night very, very slowly and gently...perhaps not at all, so she didn't feel under pressure? Or did he perhaps become a sort of 'teacher' to her, being so well-experienced compared to her? Or alternatively, do you think they were both so consumed with passion that all that stuff was irrelevant anyhow?!
Discuss (20 marks)

Ooooh!
I think going by all those heated looks, I can see her being eager but still nervous - I mean, if you take the fact that all she would have done is kissing, there is a lot things for her to learn and experience and it would be pretty overwhelming. I can see him trying to be slow (maybe not super slow as he is a man after all and if he can't stop staring at her when she's clothed well... ahem.) ANYWAY. But yes, I can see him taking it slow but teaching her things along the way.
Passion is passion, and I have read some damn good fanfics where they are consumed by it. But in my headcanon I see him trying to take it slow and teaching her how to experience her body as long as his own. Maybe they might have some sneaky heavy handed petting in a closet while they are engaged =P

I think he probably figured he would have to go slow, explain a lot, be the teacher. I think she surprised him with, um, enthusiasm, fearlessness and by being a quick learner. I don't think she was ignorant about sex or had any kind of misperceptions that it was only a duty a wife must perform. I think their engagement provided enough heated moments that she was ready.
That said, if Georg thought he knew everything because of his past experience, the fact that he was married before... I think he quickly learned that he was also starting anew. They were learning things, both of them, together.

I love this topic. It might *blushes* might be the topic I think about the most in my writing brain. Every time I write it, though, it comes out the same way, which is, yes, that he tries to take it slow but he's pretty bold.
What my brain does is that if there are curve balls *clears throat,* I think about them more in terms of her reaction, like she might be enthusiastic, or horrified, or shy. I'm OK writing Maria sometimes like she knows what's what, and other times like she's horrifyingly ignorant. I like to change her up. But I always want to think that once she's has a taste of things, she's an enthusiastic quick learner. One of my favorite headcanons about her is that she likes hearing racy talk from him even if she can't bring herself to talk that way.
I always intend to write variations where he kind of loses control and rushes things, or where he is shocked at her ignorance and it hurts her feelings, or it's been so long for him that he's lost his polish, but I can never bring myself to write him that way. He's always passionately patient or patiently passionate. Although if she's so knowledgeable, what exactly is he teaching her? I am also a big fan of engagement heavy petting. (And more, I guess, in my last M rated story). This could be a good parlor game though, like a list of G reactions and a list of M reactions, pick one from each column and write the results. Go!

I love reading all different kinds of Maria's, I guess it depends on the context - especially in an AU story. I am definitely in the camp of her liking to hear racy talk. Mostly because I am exactly like that and my partner thinks it's hilarious when I go red haha That parlor game sounds like fun by the way!

I believe that after the wedding ceremony, a reception was hosted at Georg's house with food and drinks for all the people in the church. I imagine after everybody left, Georg and Maria left for their honeymoon immediately. Do we know exactly where they went?? I dont remember now.... I think until they got officially married at church they had time to get acquainted better, talk a lot, and I don't mean intimate relations, just a little closer! As the Captain is a well-bred fine aristocrat, I imagine his strategy was step by step. Now either it all happened in one night or 2 or 3 nights were necessary, we do not know, but since Maria was absolutely infatuated with him, I dont think that a lot of nights were needed.

Or alternatively, do you think they were both so consumed with passion that all that stuff was irrelevant anyhow?! Discuss (20 marks) I can't believe I have never noticed this gem of a thread before now. I am going with very, very slowly and gently, with the option for not at all until she is ready. My guess is that Georg desires her desperately, but is very aware that he has the rest of his life to make love to her, but only one opportunity to make her first time pleasant. I think a trip to Paris in those days probably took a full 24 hours by train. I could be way off on this, geography is not my strong suit, but this is how long it took in my head. They have the wedding, reception, say goodbye to the children, then board a train that night? Or maybe stay in Salzburg that night but board a train first thing in the morning? Either way, I don't think anything happens on the wedding night but exhausted sleeping. Once they are in Paris, Georg reassures her about what he has already communicated - that he is happy to wait until she feels ready. She then has to make the first move, which she does that night, not out of obligation, but because she wants to. They are still tired from the wedding day and the long trip to Paris, so they decide to go to bed early. She is shy about initiating such things, but his gentle loving reactions make her feel confident. At this point, Georg does become a sort of teacher. He takes the lead, all the while making it clear to her that they can stop at any time if she isn't comfortable. But of course, once things are going, instincts take over, and neither of them want to stop. Who initiates round two? and when does that happen?

Do you think Maria would have told Georg everything about her past? would she have confided everything to him or keep things from her wicked childhood and miserable youth for herself?

I wish I could see every possible take of the gazebo scene from every angle, including the outtakes of Julie and Chris giggling over the raspberry noises of the lights.
I've been dreaming of that possibility for over 35 years, but neither the Three Magi nor the Tooth Fairy ever made my dream come true. Dang!

Dont you think dear Sandra that all these takes would spoil the magic of the scene we have in mind?? Because after what JA and CP have said about this, I think it must have been a very ridiculous moment for all of them, listening to those rude and dreadful noises and yet try to act as two lovebirds haha

Not at all, at least in my case. It would make the scene even more endearing. I love outtakes and bloopers. As a matter of fact, they're one of the first things I search for whenever I buy a DVD/BD. It's lovely to watch a scene in a film/TV series and remember that the actors had a laughing fit during the filming. It doesn't take me away from the mood of the film when I'm watching it.
>Because after what JA and CP have said about this, I think it must have been a very ridiculous moment for all of them, listening to those rude and dreadful noises and yet try to act as two lovebirds haha
And that's what makes it endearing in my eyes. <G>

The big orangey photo on a blue background at the very top of this page is, in a way, a blooper, as it shows them having the giggles in the gazebo - one of my favourites!

I think over their honeymoon there were a lot of lazy mornings/afternoons/evenings in bed when they just cuddled and talked. I'm sure they both shared many things about their pasts. Though, both would understand that there are some painful details there and wouldn't push the other to share anything that they weren't comfortable sharing.

I don't want to see the camera crew etc. I like to pretend that this really happened and I am (as the movie viewer) somehow the only one who is privy to the scene. Ridiculous, I know.

I think Maria would have been very nervous on the wedding night and Georg would take things slow. I've read in stories that Georg was nervous on their wedding night too.

Haha I forgot all about this thread.
I think M & G might have done a little something on the train to Paris. Perhaps not the full... Uh.. wedding night activities, but maybe something like heavy petting, falling asleep afterwards for the rest of the train ride. When they get to their hotel room, they have dinner (maybe), then wedding night activities ensue.
Brownie points to whoever makes a fic out of what I typed above.

I think someone did do a honeymoon fic with them simply sleeping on the train and finally doing the deed in Paris. I just don’t remember which one or who. It might still be on FF. Wedding Night M&G is my favorite “genre” aside from just gooey romantic fluff M&G. Given the R&H portrayal, maybe M was more exited and willing for activities than we’d expect. They do look rather carefree and giddy when they arrive back (aside from the horrible flag incident) could have been quite the 6 weeks.

“Herr Zeller, how many men do you know communicate with their children whilst on their honeymoon." Max This is such a delicious line with so many connotations but I think it goes over the heads of many people. I think it sums up M&G's honeymoon experience perfectly. Not in contact with the children because they have *ahem* better activities planned.

Hmm, my thoughts on this moment are always a mixed bag. (Movie-verse only, my thoughts on the real life story are...different.) Obviously, it's easy to think of this entire period of time as lovely, romantic, even lustful. I always tend to be of the mind that Maria was uncertain at the very beginning--new experiences have a way of doing that, enthusiasm or not--and that even if Georg was respectful of that as he's deeply in love with her, there had to be some insistence on his part. Even the best people can only be a product of their time and place and station, and all of those gave him a lot of rights to her body, no matter her wishes or how he loved her.
But even with all those thoughts, in the movie-verse, I think it was awkward to begin with that night, but passionate people figure out the passion quickly. (Unless on a train overnight for much of the journey to Paris, that would probably put a damper and yield only cuddling and everything exploding a little more the next night.)

I've seen it and written it most every possible way: wedding night in Salzburg (although not in the villa!) cuddles-only wedding night on the train. real wedding night on the train. hey, maybe I should make a poll!

(I have minimal experience with European trains, but I can't imagine the way they were in 2007 is the way they were then.) So that sounds like a next day journey, in real life, with everything...else in Austria. I'll be honest, I don't know why I'm so fascinated by teasing out what might have happened that night, I think it's because I want to know more about their relationship, mutual respect, boundaries, etc. And a poll about this would be...interesting. 110% support!

Today, I'm in the mood for this: ... they were both so consumed with passion that all that stuff was irrelevant anyhow?! By the way, augiesannie is it possible that you post the link to some of your fanfics classified as M? I never know where to go to read them Anyway, speaking more seriously (if this can be done in this context), I think there were times for everything. Inexperience allowing itself to be done, experience taking the reins, and instincts intoxicating the situation. Yes, time for everything.

Yes, time for everything. missisa, I love that idea - time for all three approaches, so to speak. I'm sorry I didn't notice your question here before. I can't link to my M stories because I try to keep this site clean of adult content. There are two ways to find my M stories. Probably the easiest is to search for me as a writer on ff.net and go to the list of my stories. Not all the M ones are explicit, I rate them that way just because of the subject matter. (But some of them are). Another thing you can do is go to the listing of all TSOM stories and use the search function to change the rating filter to M and then search again. Good luck and let me know what you think!
