I read a fic recently that pointed this out, but wasn't it incredibly bold of Maria to come back from the abbey, find out that Georg and Elsa were engaged, and then decide to walk about the grounds that night wearing the infamous blue dress? Particularly after Elsa had made such a point of alerting her to the fact that the Captain couldn't keep his eyes off of her when she wore it?
Do you think she wore it because she wanted one last night in a dream that things could have worked out differently?
Was it because she believed Elsa's words to have been false as they were now engaged, so it didn't matter what she wore?
Was it actually a stubborn little act of defiance against Elsa?
I honestly don't know. I just have not been able to stop thinking about how incredibly bold of a choice it was. I don't think I'd have been brave enough to wear it if I were Maria.
(Also I'm not sure if this is the right spot in the forum to post this thread, so forgive me if I'm wrong)

All good questions. My favorite interpretation is that she is trying to dig at Elsa. Like, she is sending a message to the baroness saying that she isn't a complete idiot, she knows what she pulled, scaring her into running away so she could win in the end BUT here, I still have this dress and let's see if he still can't keep his eyes off me. But I'm not sure she is really that vindictive or spiteful. I also think, since they dressed for dinner in those days, it was really the only dress she had that would be suitable. Her laendler dress might have been another choice, but wouldn't that just have been a reminder of the dancing they did together? Her wardrobe wasn't very large... I mean, how many dresses does a governess need? And I don't think there was much time between returning from the Abbey and making a new dress from curtains

I think lemacd called it, but just for chucks to offer an alternative: what if she wants to send him a signal? I don't think she has any hope of changing his mind, but she's saying, "I remember when you couldn't take your eyes off me, you jerk." In other words, aimed at him rather than Elsa.

I think she senses he is still all eyes for her when she returns, despite his engagement, and the same thing in her that made her sing in the Abbey and escape to the mountains makes her put on her blue dress, just to see whether she can still snatch him from under Elsa's nose. Perhaps a subconscious desire, but a strong one nevertheless!
This is a good place for this thread, AbsurdLittleBird; you'll find the conversations meander all over the place, so don't worry too much about where you put things.

It's just so bold, I cannot get over it! But I think you're right, considering how stubborn she could be, I think it's definitely feasible that in the face of appearent futility she decided it was worthwhile to just wear the dress again in a sort of desperation that she might still catch his eye.

she was so downhearted when he finds her near the gazebo, though, so if that is the case she must have decided it didn't work. How much devastation that poor girl had to deal with in one day! Good thing he kissed her and kind of proposed before it was all over.

Good thing he kissed her and kind of proposed before it was all over. Maybe she put it on in unconcious stubborness, went out walking, as she turned to go down the path to the gazebo, looked back at the house and spotted the two of them on the balcony, misinterpreted it as an intimate moment and subsequently became utterly devastated?

lol i feel like we are all writing a fanfic... ok, then what? HAHA An AU: Elsa goes to the gazebo and in the humilation of her rejection completely rips into Maria for her insolence in wearing that dress again. She does not mention the fact that the engagement has been broken off. This results in Maria once more being utterly consumed by guilt/shame, running off to hide in her room and contemplate how she can leave without betraying the children again.

Heehee!
But let us not forget that if she runs back to her room, then if the story is to run its course, the only place Georg can find her...is there...say no more (but you can if you like!)

I've actually written several times about what seems obvious from the movie - that Maria might have been able to look up at the balcony to watch E&G. And if you couldn't hear them, or weren't close enough to sense the tension in how he's holding himself, they could look quite cozy - her hand on his arm and so on, his chuckling despite himself at her joke. So I picture her watching them and turning away at the worst of it. Which would make her "Baroness will make it fine" comment even more bitter. BUT I like where absurdlittlebird and indigoblue and lemacd are going, much better.

If I was in Maria's shoes I would be terribly shy and embarrassed to wear this dress at the dinner with the Captain and Elsa being engaged. It would be like provoking the baroness by sending a message to the captain, like here I am, look at me, I wear the same dress when we were dancing and I blushed... The argument against Maria could be....Since you know that this man is engaged and is going to marry another woman, why do you dig your nose in their relation? Don't you think about her? he is her man, not yours. Maybe I would find an excuse not to go to the dinner. BUT on the other hand Maria why did she return back with the RM's blessing? to find out if he truly loves her, because she acknowledged to herself and RM that she is in love with him. RM told her to go back and find out. At first she did not want but RM told her to face the problems, not hide behind the walls of the abbey. I think for this reason she wore this blue dress, again if she wore the laendler dress, we would say the same comments. In any case as a governess she was payed from the captain, so logically she must have had some money to buy or make a new one or even borrow one. So on purpose she wore it definitely, it was not at random or because she did not have a second one. Also after dinner she could have gone to her room. She could have avoided the captain. During all these days and the realization of her feelings she must have been exstausted, she was also crashed at finding out that the captain finally was engaged. However, I have the feeling that she was waiting for him to come at the gazebo. I conclude that the blue dress and the fact that she was strolling around the lake and gazebo was her final call to the captain for finding out the truth.

There is another thread on this called "maria's clothes" under movie observations. I don't think she wore it to provoke Elsa. She's too kind for this. I don't think she wore it to get Georg back. She thinks she's already lost him. My only thought is that this is her "formal dinner dress" that she wears every night, so she of course wore it that night too. ? I'm sure she is getting paid, but I don't think she would buy new clothes with this money. She'd probably donate it to the poor. So I don't think she has any other dresses except those she made from the material sent out from town, this dress, and the Laendler dress. Really it's just so she's wearing the dress we know he likes during the gazebo scene.

What do you think about her not having worn the blue dress to dinner, but having put it on after the kids were in bed before her stroll outside? She doesn't wear it to dinner because that would provoke Elsa. She puts it on when she thinks she will be alone and no one will see her because she is so sad and wants to relive the happy memories from past times that she has worn it. Everyone in this movie seems to change clothes multiple times a day anyway, so maybe this is not that weird. Thoughts?

For going out into the garden she passed from the sitting room where everybody was hanging out. Otherwise how the captain saw her go out and followed her in the balcony? Wear the one dress at dinner and after 1 hour, put on the blue dress for strolling around, it sounds an exaggeration...we talk about a girl who used old drapes to make playclothes, I do not think she put so much importance on clothes. She knows about the engagement, she cannot do anything!! so I imagine she wore it just because she was looking for an answer according to RM's request, she made an ultimate attempt to receive that answer. She was crashed by her sorrow, I give her credits for participating in the dinner, for me I do not know if I could stand it, see the man I love with somebody else and pretend that nothing goes wrong.

Really it's just so she's wearing the dress we know he likes during the gazebo scene. He likes her, even if she is dressed in dresses made from old drapes. I do not think that the dresses make the difference in Maria's case but her lovely personality and smartness, and the fact that she suceeded in unlocking them all and reconnect them again through the sound of music. The captain did not search for a beautiful woman in beautiful gowns, he had Elsa and many others for sure.
