There is a moment when Friedrich bumps Maria, I think when she's told she should blow her nose at dinner or something, and I think we are supposed to think that is when he put the frog in her pocket. What is Fraulein Maria thinking? How she can't believe such darling children could have such a malicious streak? That she lost control of the situation awfully fast, even for her? What do you think she would have said next if Frau Schmidt hadn't rescued her from the kiddie mob? Thoughts? please share if you have them.

I think she'd be thinking "This is going to be even harder than I thought". As for her next line, maybe something along the lines of "I like you too" or "I'm excited to get to know you all better/ hope we can get along"
As for Friedrich and the frog, yeah that's probably right, but all I can see is Nicholas' adoring love of Julie. He always seems to be close to her throughout the movie. Maybe it's just the directing or coincidence, but that's all I see in such moments. For me, it's so relatable.

As a kid, I was always fascinated by the idea that Friedrich must have been holding onto that frog all the time that they were at attention in the hall - yeeuch! No surprise it was keen to get away...

What does Frau Schmidt think of Maria as compared to the previous governesses when she interrupts this scene? She is probably quite relieved that there is a governess in the house, as many of these child care duties probably fell on her between governesses. But I wonder what her initial impression was. What an ugly dress? She's younger than I thought she'd be? I bet she won't last a week?

I always thought Frau Schmidt was quite respectful of Maria in the bedroom, talking about the new material. Maybe this is because she took an instant shine to her, and wants her to stay? Especially as she is expecting Georg to marry Elsa, whom she knows is not a good mother.
In addition, if Maria is the first governess to come from the Abbey, and only has few belongings, then maybe this means she feels more protective of her -perhaps a kind of mother to her?

Yes, I think Frau Schmidt likes Maria right away and probably wants to take her under her wing so to speak. She is very open with her telling her about the Captain and the children, etc.

The captain must really be concerned with good manners. All of the "advice" the children give her is about behaving poorly at dinner. Show up late, slurp your soup, blow your nose, tell Georg to mind his own business - it is interesting trying to put yourself in the children's shoes and determine what they think will infuriate their father the most. Bad table manners! Are these things that other governesses have done and they took note that their father disapproved? Are these offenses enough to get fired over?

I've always assumed that the older children were simply testing Maria with nonsense to get closer to her and put the frog in her pocket. Only the smallest girls could take seriously those "recommendations" that are too obvious to anyone, even the governess who only stayed "for two hours" 😂

They are offences bad enough to get fired over if you have a stickler for an employer like Georg! I think he believes that what is not acceptable in the Navy is not acceptable in his home. He clearly has a problem switching off from his military days!
When is the last time we see 'military behaviour' from him?

When is the last time we see 'military behaviour' from him? That’s a really interesting point that I hadn’t considered. Are you asking when does he stop “running this house like he’s on one of his ships?” Because I think that stops after The Apology. But he does always seem to carry himself with the posture and carriage of a serious military man, more so when in uniform, or “uniform” (his trachten jacket). I will say, the few times we see him in a regular suit he seems to be a hair more relaxed, especially The Gazebo and the Return from Honeymoon.

When is the last time we see 'military behaviour' from him? The Argument! It takes the children's singing to officially melt him, but he's off balance with his emotions going into that.

I would say there is military behavior later on, in his verbal confrontations with Herr Zeller at the party and (my favorite) when he slams the Mercedes' door after being easily started by Herr Zeller's nazi "butler". Does this count? 😅

Yes, the military veneer reemerges rapidly at any public confrontation...
Interesting, today I was reading in a weekend section of the London Times newspaper a piece written by a (male) psychotherapist, about how many men feel more comfortable in an uncertain situation expressing their status rather than revealing anything about what they are feeling, or using diplomatic/negotiating skills...sounds like GvT, except actually he does end up negotiating their trip to the concert in the end.

Random observation - When the frog is hopping out the door, we get a glimpse of the children's shoes. They are well worn, which I just find to be fabulous attention to detail by the costume department. Children's shoes would of course have scuffs and dirt on them, and not look brand new even if they were before that scene.

They did spend a lot of time trying to be authentic; apparently they spent a lot of time sourcing contemporary fabrics in the right colours, tights that weren't 'nylon' so they would 'bag' in a realistic way, local lederhosen for the boys. Must have taken ages!
