ok, so... Maria was known to be late for everything except for every meal so let's share a few theories for this. I think that perhaps she got lost...

I do love how they are all turned to stare at her as she comes running in...

I don't know why I think this, but I feel her face looks a different sort of panic. When she runs into the Abbey she's late and, with everyone staring at her, knows she's been caught. She can feel the nuns' eyes on her. Not only is this not happening here; because she's walking into a room, rather than across a courtyard, but because of the different situation and location, she doesn't know what will happen.
However I also think she probably got lost.

12 years later (or should it be 40?), Gretl's hairstyle hit the big time. Addendum: I find it interesting that the Captain is facing away from the door. I would think that someone like him* would want to be at the other end of the table, facing the door, so he can easily see who is coming into the room. *This may be my personal experience speaking, in terms of me interacting socially with people in military/law enforcement backgrounds who prefer to be able to see as much of a room as possible, including the entries/exits, even when sitting at a dinner table. Situational awareness purposes.

andhereweare I agree with you, someone like him would prefer to have a view of the door. of course, they put him there for movie reasons. I think his back being to the entryway made it possible for Liesl to sneak away which, as we know, needed to happen for a couple of reasons, most importantly so Maria could take her first steps to earning the children's trust.

I've read a few funny stories where she was late because the children locked her in her room; another one where the children had thrown her belongings outside in the garden and she had to retrieve; in one of my stories they put a cup of flour over her wardrobe door.
Maybe she was so busy searching for snakes in her closet she lost track of the time....?

Yep. I think just seeing the screencap made the seating arrangement really stand out to me.

I think she was so excited at the prospect of having some new clothes for the first time in a long time, she got carried away doodling some new designs on an old envelope. That's why she was late...

Actually, I think she was texting Sister Margaretha to say how hunky her new boss was, then got carried away.
That's why she has that funny look on her face.

YES!
Isn't there a meme type thing somewhere on here with screencaps from Climb Ev'ry Mountain that's meant to be Maria and the Reverend Mother talking about Georg's booty?

Apologies, but the exact meaning of 'booty' hasn't made its way to this quaint corner of olde England yet; it can be used occasionally as slang for either money or jewels (perfectly possible in Georg's case), but I want to check I'm not missing something...
I'm thinking maybe 'booty' is a West Indian corruption of the word 'beauty'? (Georg definitely has 'da booty' in that case), but at the back of my mind, I'm also thinking that in England, a 'boot' is also the rear end of a car. Could it possibly be that the Reverend Mother is asking Maria whether the Captain has a nice bum? This may well be so, in fact perhaps he has all three, in which case...mmmmm...but I'd love to be put in the picture, if you'd be so kind...

"Booty" is slang for a person's rear end. So yes, the Reverend Mother is talking about his posterior.

Ah, I had a feeling the Old Girl still had life in her...
Sadly, Georg ALWAYS seems to wear a jacket in the film, so we are unable to verify these delicious facts for ourselves. Shame.

Hahaha found this thread hilarious! Loved the theories of bloomandgrow about Maria having previously being fooled by the children, so funny and yet so possible! I think I've always thought that she was so nervous about meeting that gorgeous-handsome-comely-complete-this-with-an-other-adjective, she really lost track of the time but I prefer your theories:P

of course, if Georg is at the 'I can see clearly, now' end of the table, the pinecone trick goes out the window. Perhaps he switched places just for this introduction ?

Why is Georg at that end of the table? It seems odd, doesn't it? I would think he'd want to be where Maria sits so that he could see if/when anyone was walking in the door.

Aha, I think I have it, and it is because Franz has to come in to give Georg the telegram. If G were at the other end, it wouldn't be so neat, because Franz wouldn't be able to nip in and out so easily from seeing Rolf at the front door.

I just can imagine M every time running for meal and just before door stops and enter to dinning room. That's why she is wearing watch after honeymoon 🙂 I am just wondering what else change

I'm bringing this up because I've recently rewatched the dinner scene and I love that moment where Franz brings the telegram to the Captain and he absentmindedly turns to pick it up while he finishes sipping one last drink of wine. Well maybe I should be writing this in the thread about CP gestures (too late!) but did someone else notice that lovely gesture he does like if he was REALLY tasing the wine before he puts the glass on the table? I bet they were drinking real wine and eating real food. Always wondered about this and not sure if it comes from my imagination or not but I think I've read they were eating smoked salmon so I assume drink was good too (and so the wine!)
