I'm bringing this up because I've recently rewatched the dinner scene and I love that moment where Franz brings the telegram to the Captain and he absentmindedly turns to pick it up while he finishes sipping one last drink of wine. Well maybe I should be writing this in the thread about CP gestures (too late!) but did someone else notice that lovely gesture he does like if he was REALLY tasing the wine before he puts the glass on the table? I bet they were drinking real wine and eating real food. Always wondered about this and not sure if it comes from my imagination or not but I think I've read they were eating smoked salmon so I assume drink was good too (and so the wine!) I think I read that the chocolate cake was real. One thing I like about that wine glass is that's the size wine glasses always were for years before the current trend for HUGE glasses took hold.

I think all of the food was real. I read that they told Charmian not to lose any weight, so she was happy to do take after take (they brought in new food after each take so that they could start the scene over) and eat all the delicious food she wanted without worrying about her figure. I'm not sure if the wine was real or not. Maybe CP suggested that it should be so that he could drink all day at work that day? haha.

Georg has white wine during dinner and then red wine during dessert. Seems odd, doesn't it? Or maybe it is some sort of after dinner brandy drink with the cake?

Port, perhaps? Or (being a naval man) rum?
There are several good Austrian wines, so maybe a red dessert wine?

Although I would love to think that wines and alcohol is something that comes from Chris, I believe that it is nothing more than an element that adds sophistication to the character and, in general, to the environment: alcohol appears when "they" want to show a harsh atmosphere (the dinner), sophisticated (the party) or adult issues (they mention it in the breakup while in the balcony).

Oh no! You're right, Indigo. I've never noticed this window behind Liesl. It looks like there may be one behind Gretl too. This does not work with my current floorplan at all!! How can this room be at the corner of the house (there is a window behind Maria too, so two walls have windows) when the stove is near the middle of the sitting room? We see a door in the sitting room behind the children when they are singing TSOM to Elsa, so there must be another room between the dining room and the exterior wall. But it makes no sense to have a windows in the dining room on that side then. Ug, back to the drawing board. Oh wait, maybe this isn't a door? (https://movie-screencaps.com/the-sound-of-music-1965/page/49#foobox-1/44/sound-music-movie-screencaps.com-8685.jpg?ssl=1) Maybe it is just fancy wall trim that I'm mistaking as a door? I still don't think the dining room is that big. You're the floorplan expert, indigoblue. What do you think? Is the dining room at the corner of the house?

I would say it might be a door to a pantry that leads to a downstairs kitchen (like in Downton Abbey for those of you who have seen it). Where are the kitchen and the servants in this house, anyway?

There definitely needs to be a pantry and kitchen. I assumed those were in the basement. I had a dishes cupboard behind Liesl, but now that this is a window, it doesn't make sense. We've seen the back exterior of the house, so we know there isn't a notch, but the dining room just doesn't seem big enough to fill out the whole space of the sitting room from the stove to the back wall behind the Edelweiss couch. hmm.
