When I was a kid, I always wondered why Maria didn't use the new drapes to make play clothes for the children. It looks good and it's brand new. I used to think maybe the captain would be less upset if it's from the new drapes. ("Are you telling me that my children have been roaming about Salzburg.....dressed up in nothing but some old drapes?" )

I think a few things:
1) The problem of "You just showed up here and used the brand-new drapes I bought to make play clothes!?!?!"; 2) She'd have a lack-of-drapes-in-her-bedroom issue; and 3) The old drapes, with the pattern, were much more noticeable. So his kids running all over the place wearing patterned outfits stood out, and he knew it.
Welcome!

But I don't think she would have a lack-of-drapes-in-her-bedroom issue since she could always use the old ones. Or maybe.....she wanted to start making the play clothes as soon as possible (Frau Schmidt said the new drapes had been ordered but didn't say when it would arrive. ) Well, I have never thought about that.

That's true that the old ones could have been put into use again if she used the new ones for clothes.
And perhaps she had to live a day or two or three because she started sewing the old drapes into clothes before the new drapes arrived...

G: Are you telling me my children have been roaming around Salzburg in nothing but new drapes? M: Mhmm! And having a marvelous time! G: They have old drapes... M: Straightjackets, if you'll forgive me. G: Straightjackets? M: Oh, I thought you were talking about uniforms. The old drapes... yes, well. Turns out they didn't have nearly as much wear left as I thought. Kurt mooned a tour group near Mirabell Gardens. G: Fraulein... I-I-I'm speechless. M: I doubt you'll stay speechless for long.

Actually I also wonder why she could make seven play clothes and had plenty of wear left. I know nothing about sewing but three sets of drapes don't seem enough for this to me.

These drapes are such a noticeable pattern. Do you think Elsa made the connection when she saw the kids getting out of the water that they were the same "urchins" she had seen climbing trees earlier that day?
What about Max? I wonder if he knew in the moment that those were the Georg's children in the trees, but knew better than to point that out in the car.
Maybe this was a topic of conversation while G&M were arguing and the children were changing out of their wet clothes?
Max: (speaking to Elsa after seeing the children run through the house) Did the children really fall out of a boat? They look quite bedraggled. Elsa: Oh darling, you should have been there. It was quite a scene! Max: Did you notice the children climbing trees earlier? And what do you make of their clothes? Elsa: Dreadful, all of it. Georg is outside firing the governess right now.

Elsa may have noticed the kids in the trees; bearing in mind her fabulous clothes, she may have thought the playclothes made from drapes were a whole lot more interesting than the normal clothes the kids wore!
