I am not sure exactly why I picked this cap as the next one but I think it's the all the eyes... … the way Franz is looking at the Captain like "I am only doing this job until we take over the country" and Liesl looking at the telegram like "I thought my womanly hormones were tingling, Rolf is here!" and Georg is looking at Franz like "We talked about this, telegrams are to be delivered on a silver tray!" and Marta is just... I think maybe she ate a bad piece of schnitzel. It makes me appreciate the seating arrangement because this is Maria's POV... taking in the way Franz talks to the family, maybe wondering if that is what she is supposed to be like, seeing Liesl spring to life at the work 'telegram'... watching G's reaction to the telegram and naturally curious about the man's business that brings telegrams that are urgent enough to interrupt dinner. Thoughts?

Talking about the arrangement, I am always aware that the pointed stove in its alcove in the background and also the door case serve to frame Georg, thereby increasing his apparent importance. The gold detailing on the far wall add to the effect - would have been quite intimidating for Maria if she didn't have so much spunk...

I am also curious about how the seating arrangement would be after Max and Elsa's arrival. Apparently the table would be too tight for eleven people. Guess Maria or/and the children might need to have meals sometime or somewhere else...

And I am aware that Maria was sitting at the hostess seat at the end of the table facing the host, while there's still space on one side of the table which only got three children seated. Sometimes I wonder if this was Georg's order or it's just a hint for the following plot.

Guess Maria or/and the children might need to have meals sometime or somewhere else... I've often wondered as well. I think when Elsa visited, the children dined separately. She was there to meet the children but I doubt she wanted to be with them every waking minute of the day. But I have often thought that when it was just Uncle Max, he joined the entire family and was tucked at the end near Georg so they could have their manly conversations.

Maybe that's the reason that why Rolfe asked if the captain was dinning with his family? Except...he knew Elsa was not in town through the telegram...anyways, I really think that Georg should get a bigger table.

So who is going to volunteer to fix the out-of-place hair in the back? Or volunteer to make it worse?

My caps not showing up. Now I REALLY need to see that out of place

His hair is entirely different in this part of the film (slicked back and straight), compared to when they return from their honeymoon (wavy and all sort of swooshy).
Is this deliberate? Are we to read into it his transformation from regimented robot into sensuous lover? How much can one read into hair?
(And yes, I would like to smooth down that impudent little curl at the back of his head...)

I think it it's deliberate. Like she's helped him loosen a few buttons on that honeymoon, literally and figuratively 😉.

YAY I SEE IT NOW. It is indeed nice that it's all from Maria POV. Agree with your original thought lemacd. Franz does look like he's thinking about when the Nazis take over. And Marta does look like she wants to throw up. I think Georg almost looks like he's about to spray his drink everywhere (on Franz would be nice) - in a sort of unexpected-news-that-makes-one-sputter way.

I love the framing of this scene. It reminds me of Wes Anderson's film - he uses symmetry a lot in his films.
Also now that I've seen that little bit of hair sticking out, I can never unsee it. I'm going to be pawing at my screen (more so than I normally do).
