I never though about this until just now, but do you think the song "So Long, Farewell" is foreshadowing Maria saying "so long" to the Von Trapps, (or rather her lack of saying goodbye) because she leaves later that night. I also realized that while she does not say good bye to the children, technically they say bye to her, though they don't know it, because the last time she sees them is when they sing "goodbye." This could just be coincidence, but I think it' s interesting!

Maybe, but also foreshadowing their escape from Austria as well.

That’s really interesting, I have always thought the song was a very long, drawn out way of saying “Goodnight”! It does give some ‘punctuation’ to that part of the story, and foreshadowing always adds to the mystery and atmosphere of the situation . Good spot!
