If you change the era that their story takes place in, what kind of music do you think they would have liked the most? Once you take away 30s Waltzes and bring in say, 70s Disco, what songs do you think they would have enjoyed, and what would have replaced the Laendler? We should do this for a bunch of eras, 40s-80s.

I just had an idea for an AU fanfiction, but I suck at writing, so someone should pick this up. It's only the Laendler part. So basically, the party is taking place, but it's the 70s, so instead of an orchestra you have some kind of DJ using records of Disco and Rock music. Maybe instead of a ballroom and patio, the Villa has some kind of dance floor room setup specifically for parties like this. I envision that Georg used dancing in clubs as a way to move past his wife's death *cough* drinking *cough*, while all the Governess's were at the Villa struggling to wrangle his children. This would be before he met Elsa, so he would have become an exceedingly good solo dancer within the Disco scene. I imagine most of the people there would know that and give him his space if he wanted it. I could see him pushing away from Elsa when The Bee Gees 'You Should Be Dancing' comes on and taking over the whole floor. Maybe the children are in another room with Maria working on the YMCA for their performance? That's the only thing I can see replacing So Long, Farewell that's from the 70s. If anyone else has something better, please tell me! LMAO! I see it being that Maria comes in after their practicing and catches the Captain dancing solo and of course, goes red in the face, not sure of what she's feeling. We all know what Disco dancing looks like, so for a postulant, it's a little much to see. However, I think Maria, being mischievous, has probably snuck out and seen dancing and heard the music in clubs before, perhaps even participated before somehow and become quite good. This leads into the next part. When Georg's solo song ends, he's probably a bit tired and needs a good drink, so he'll go take a seat with Max, who will give him a good hardy pat on the back. Then we'll hear Maria's favorite song. Once when she snuck out, she happened by a Disco club and heard a particular song that she could never forget; now that she's hearing it again she wants to dance, but someone might catch her! Who's she kidding, no one pays attention to the Governess anyway when they have a partner! She sneaks into the middle of the dance floor to The Jackson 5 'Dancing Machine'. She's surprisingly confident in her dancing for a postulant, and somehow no one has taken notice of her. Well, except for someone at the bar. Georg spotted the blonde hair and her dress. He couldn't believe his eyes. She's dancing, and she's... she is amazing! His mouth went dry, and Max happened not to notice as he ordered a cocktail for himself. Max snaps Georg back to the conversation. After the song ends, Maria begins to try to sneak away as the next song begins Earth, Wind & Fire 'Got To Get You Into My Life', but Georg catches her first. She looks up at him in terror, afraid she has angered him by participating. Instead, he takes her hand in his and leads her to a more secluded part of the dance floor.
And that's where the idea ends.

You have so many details figured out - I think you should be the author! I know you said you are not a writer (I can empathize because I am not either), but I bet one of the writers on this sight would beta read a draft for you if you asked nicely. We all love new fanfiction.

And I guarantee you that if someone else picked it up here, you'd be dissatisfied with the results, just like any good artist would be with an imitator. I think your idea is extremely creative but I'm not good at music things. One of my regrets is that I would love to use music as a symbol between M&G - there are moments where the music would be very orderly or prim or passionate or gloomy - but I don't know enough about music. The story idea that's been in my head for months would benefit from that. Also @jay70s I don't know how old you are - judging by your username maybe you're around my age - but I went to college in the 70s and I'm over disco. But I LOVE the idea.

You should see me looking at real estate, LOL!

How can you be "over" Disco? Disco is fantastic. The Bee Gees, Earth Wind & Fire, like... B O I

Here's the 1st, like, half? Of the story because the rest is literally just smut. lmao, I'm trash. I'm probably the only male on this forum that's like, yeah, I read TSoM fanfiction. I'm trash, what of it?
“The Baroness’ gone?” Maria gawped at the Captain. He smirked at her amusing reaction, “Yes, Fräulein. The Baroness has left; sadly before the big party.” He gestured with his hands in the air. Maria crossed her arms while tapping her chin, “Yes, does that mean the party is off? What will I tell the children?” Her brow furrowed in frustration. “The party is not cancelled. I knew the children would be very adamant on it still continuing with or without the Baroness.” Maria let out a sigh of relief, “Oh! That’s fantastic! They will be so happy, Sir.” Her face always had a glow when she was happy, and the Captain certainly noticed though he wasn’t sure why. “Yes, yes, I’m sure they will be very pleased. Anyway, do you have something to wear for the party?” The Captain teased, referencing back to her ugly Postulant’s dress when she first arrived. Maria giggled, “Yes, I’ve been working on it ever since I knew there would be a party!” He nodded his approval, “I look forward to seeing your craftsmanship, Fräulein!” The conversation paused as they kept looking into each other’s eyes, but were swiftly interrupted by the children bursting in the room leaving Maria with a blushed face. “Father, the Baroness is gone! The party isn’t cancelled is it?” The Captain tapped Gretl on the nose before issuing his very important statement, “The party is” as he paused for dramatic effect; Maria side eyed him, “Still very much happening!” The children erupted in cheers of joy. “We were so worried! Uncle Max said he didn’t know anything, but we thought he was lying!” The Captain laughed, “I haven’t talked to Max yet, just Mar- I mean, Fräulein Maria. Pardon me. So go run and tell Uncle Max the party is still happening tonight.” The children scurried out of the room as the Captain turned back to Maria. “I don’t suppose you have much experience with these sorts of affairs, so just keep an eye on the children.” Maria began to protest, “Well I actually ha-“, but she was cut-off by the Captain being called by Frau Schmidt. “Captain, you have a call on your office telephone!” The Captain rolled his eyes and gave a small smile to Maria, “Excuse me, Fräulein.” By 7 PM that evening, the party was roaring with life. The buffet table covered and the DJ at the back of the Villa’s converted ballroom with his stacks of records. The room was darkened and the floor lit with multicolored LEDs. Maria was busy keeping the children entertained with a small party of their own. A movie and snacks seemed to be keeping them from going anywhere, so Maria decided to check out the party for herself. She had seen the room it was being held in and was amazed at its grand size and design. The music was emanating from the walls, and Maria recognized the song from her days as a Postulant sneaking out of the Abbey to clubs, where she would hear music and even dance when she became brave and overtaken by the best songs. She feared the Captain might catch her but thought he would be too preoccupied with guests and dancing to even notice her quickly sneaking in the door. ‘The Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” was just ending as Maria slipped in the door. The DJ swapped to a new record as Max shouted for the dancefloor to clear, ‘Chic’ “Le Freak” blared through the speakers, and Maria instantly recognized it as she had heard it many times in Discos while sneaking out at night. She didn’t expect the Captain to be the only one left on the dancefloor when she turned around and everyone else to be watching from the sides. Her breath caught and she turned crimson all over. The carefree way he moved his body across the dancefloor was a far cry from the usually stern and buttoned up Captain she knew. The people on the sides were moving side to side with the beat and would occasionally cheer out his name or official title. Maria couldn’t even get close, as she was frozen in place at the sight. She noticed he wasn’t even wearing a tie and his collar was unbuttoned two or three down and she grew even redder at the sight. She clamped her hand over her mouth when her eyes wandered lower. The way his hips moved was utterly hypnotizing. She had seen it in clubs before. Why couldn’t she tear her eyes away? Why was she so flustered now? He held his hands behind his back; his knees bent in a squat, and rolled his hips to the beat. Maria felt her stomach tighten and a shudder she had never felt before ran through her. She exhaled into her hand and made a squeak. It was like torture of the sweetest kind. She felt the urge to grab him and didn’t even know why. The song finally ended, and the Captain bowed to the cheering and hollering crowd of friends. Maria noticed the Captain going to sit at the bar in the room for a drink, so she thought she could sneak a request into the DJ and get a dance in of her own before returning to the children. Yes, that would help clear her mind after seeing all that. She snuck to the DJ booth and requested one of her favorite songs. ‘The Jackson 5’ “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)” seemed a shock to everyone on the dancefloor at first, but they quickly got into a groove worthy of the best clubs. Maria danced her way into the middle of the dancefloor; sure the Captain and Max wouldn’t be able to catch her. Max ordered a Pink Rum from the bartender, after giving Georg a hearty slap on the back for a job well done. Georg just chuckled as he sipped at his White Russian, but as he scanned the dancefloor, he nearly spat out his drink. Maria was dancing in the middle, and… she was amazing. But how, how could she be such a good dancer? She was a Postulant for God knows how many years! They’re incredibly strict about everything. Her dancing was having an obvious effect on his body. He was turning as pink as Max’s drink and had to cross one leg over the other no matter how uncomfortable it was getting. He had lost the conversation with Max completely and had no interest in continuing it. He gulped down his drink and slammed down the glass to Max’s surprise, “Georg! Don’t go around breaking the glassware!” Georg grumbled, “I pay for it, Max. Besides, I was thirsty!” Max laughed, “Have you ever tried water, Georg?” Georg rolled his eyes in response as the song ended. The DJ flipped the next record onto the player, ‘Earth, Wind, & Fire’ “Love’s Holiday” and Maria began to make her escape from the dancefloor. Georg caught her by the hand first, staring into her eyes practically bulging out of their sockets. He walked closer to her, and she began to stutter an apology, “Reverend Mother! I mean! Captain! I shouldn’t have! I just wanted to! The children were watching the movie, and I just thought that! I’m so sorry…” Her head fell, so the Captain placed his fingers under her chin and lifted it. “No apologies necessary.” He smiled, “Where did you learn to dance like that? You never told me.” She scrunched her face as she looked up at him, “I never had a reason. You’re my employer. Well, I tried to earlier today, but then you had the phone call.” He reached out for her other hand, “Will you dance with me, Maria?” She tentatively took his hand; he pulled her close and they swayed back and forth to the song. Her arms slowly moved around his neck, as he crossed his hands behind her lower back. They were dancing away in a corner, off of the dance floor. “Captain, I-“ His expression suddenly went blank as he kept staring into her eyes, his mouth parted slightly, “Please, call me Georg.” He lifted her chin with his right hand and guided her to kiss him. Her hands slid into his hair as she made a small moan. He pulled away and smiled at her. She smiled shyly and stroked the hair at his neck. “I was going to say that I used to sneak out at night to dance and hear music.” He began to kiss her neck, whispering in her ear, “Of course you did. How could I have not guessed that?”
