What always stroke me as weird in TSOM was that although Maria was a postulant, a girl who would become a nun, however, she knew how to stand in society, speak freely without being afraid, have an opinion and express it, play the guitar, dance perfectly the laendler with ease and grace, even swim and canoe along the river. She even confronted boldly the Captain after the boat accident without second thoughts. I feel if I was on her shoes I would have social anxiety and panic attacks. I would be very stressed and I would be afraid to do any wrong because I would think that the captain would reveal all to the RM and she would throw me away from the abbey. So I would lose apart from the job, the position at the abbey also. I would have also many guilty feelings...is this or that wrong? yet Maria is the personification of the independent carefree spirit.
Where does this savoir vivre of Maria come from, do you believe??

This is a fun question!
I always picture Maria as coming from a poor background. She doesn't care what other people think of her the way that high society people do because she has never had to. Someone like Elsa would never yell at the captain in public, as this would make others think she has poor manners, which is what high society people fear most. Maria doesn't have this same anxiety because people in her social class were more straightforward and less concerned with appearances.
It would be interesting to know where she learned to dance and play guitar and organize musical productions, because she is wonderful at all of these. Maybe her village had a folk festival that she was involved in?? I picture her as living up in the mountains, and therefore having experience with being outdoors in nature. I imagine she would have learned how to swim and canoe in her youth.
I've never thought about if Maria fears that the captain will tell RM about her rule breaking. I think she feels like his rules are ridiculous and need broken in order for his children to heal. This is more important than having to explain herself to RM. And RM is quite used to her rule breaking, and probably would not be surprised to hear that this trait followed her to her governess position. Maria seems like an act now, ask for forgiveness later kind of person. Plus, I don't think that she thinks that they will kick her out of the abbey. She seems shocked when RM says that it's God's will that she leave (before RM explains that the leave is only temporary), like the thought had never crossed her mind that breaking the rules might get her kicked out.

I agree with reverendcaptain about Maria coming from a poor background. I've always thought that her parents died when she was young, leaving her in the care of her abusive uncle, which is what happened in real life to the real Maria. Her uncle probably didn't make Maria's clothes, so Maria must've had to buy the fabric and make her clothes at a young age. I'm pretty sure that she described herself somewhere as being more tomboyish, so that explains where she learned to swim and canoe. She says in the movie that she grew up on the mountain, so that's why she loves nature so much - it's kind of like a place to get away from everything that's bothering her. I imagine that's where she went a lot when she was young. She probably sang a lot as a child, too. I have no idea where she learned to dance. Maybe she learned from her parents?
