It is just because that is how old he looks to me...I have an idea CP was, in fact, in his late 30s when he took the part; his hair was greyed a little at the sides to make him look older than he actually was.

I swear I read CP was only, like, 36 when he played the part. They definitely had to gray him up (which is partly why I think his hair is so inconsistent).

I do love exploring the idea of Maria being his mistress but somehow can’t bring myself to write about it other than in a “fantasy” type thing that the already engaged/married M&G explore together. Though I did cover it a bit in “water under the bridge”. I think I mostly struggle to keep it in character when they’re having an affair but there are some fab fics where this is covered really well and it’s super believable even while they remain in character. When I wrote What is it You Can’t Face, I really struggled with writing Georg as an unlegendary lover because it somehow seems so engrained in his character to be a rake and a great teacher. But actually coming to think of it, there’s nothing to necessarily suggest this about him in canon. Very interesting topic to discuss! Despite the controversial(?) adultery, Water Under the Bridge is one of the most incredible fanfics out there. The depth of M & G’s emotions are just... I can’t even describe. Kudos to you, warmwoollenmittens . I probably go back and read that one more than any other story. this post made me go back to read Water Under the Bridge and, gosh, it really is a great story. Kudos to warmwoollenmittens.

Oh and about about G's age indigoblue and reverendcaptain? I actually have him at 46-ish precisely because I want him to have time to have a rakish past haha. As part of hatoff's Now When I Want You, I gave him an early start at sixteen-going-on-seventeen, and then had him marrying Agathe at about 28, leaving him plenty of time for heroism and mischief before marriage and Liesl. I also write Maria a little younger than the actual Maria was, maybe 23-ish. I completely admit that this is also because I find the age difference appealing, which not everyone does.

As I’m sure all of you know, it is often said that CP’s somewhat dark, severe interpretation “made” the film. I wrote a couple of stories riffing on the choice Jane makes to leave Rochester rather than live in sin with him when the truth comes out about his inconvenient wife. Put in Jane’s position, Maria says she’d make a different choice to stay. People did NOT like this! Why do you think people don't like mistress stories? Fanfiction often pulls people out of character, so that can't be it. Fanfiction also often has them together before marriage, so it can't be a religion thing. Do you think people just find this too disrespectful towards Maria? I'm just wondering why the push back on this topic, and not on others. Have you read "What's in a look?" by warmwoollenmittens? Maria is not his mistress in this, though she would have been if that were how it had to be. She thinks she could be, but to mistress is not in characters. That is perfect for someone who can switch missing time with jewelry and she is not like that . It's just not part of her character to comprehend that. It would destroy her inside.

That story about whole family traveling to Paris and so, so funny, noghty, I've read twice and every time make laugh, especially scene with whistle on train station and nude in museum, and of course dangers, jelousee G. Just... Fantastic story. Yes, story is finished with M suggestion being mistress but like G said she would be terrible one (or in another story). That role is for different type of character, introvert, quite or practical person (diamond's) but not for M. Situation that G sharing bed with her and someone else would just destroy her. And please do not forget that she was for that period in history was well educated and independent and in the end she would probably run for good.

Do you think Georg ever dated anyone outside his elite social circle or outside his approximate age range before Maria? He joined the Navy when he was 14, so maybe he didn't do much dating at all before Agathe? I think they met when he was 28. I'm just wondering how much experience he has with falling in love, and if he has ever fallen for someone he was not supposed to fall for before.

I think in those circles in those days, they probably didn't meet many people outside their own class. Their social life both in the navy and outside was very carefully orchestrated.
However, occasionally they might meet different people, like a groom looking after their horses, or one of the house staff, and unions occurred, but were very much hushed up so people didn't get to know. In fact infidelity was rife in elite circles and contraception rare/ineffective, so children frequently ensued.

from the little I recall of how Georg and Agathe met in IRL - and I haven't read his memoir, that might change my mind - I think he might have had flirtations but that she was the first person he really fell in love with.
