Hello! I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but anyways, has anyone read any SOM-related memoirs, or at least in Julie and Chris' case, memoirs that contain a lil bit about SOM? Because I've just recently acquired the digital versions of Home Work by Julie, In Spite of Myself by Chris, and Forever Liesl by Charmian Carr, (and I'm looking for a copy of Maria von Trapp's memoir) and I was just wondering what your opinions about these were, and if there were other books/memoirs you would recommend

I haven’t, but I want to! It’s on my to-do list after I finish this master’s degree I’m working on. Following along for the responses here.

I've read both of Julie's memoirs, Home as well as Home Work and I love them. That said, if I remember correctly, the part about TSOM doesn't give you that much information that we didn't already know from her interviews and such. So while I can definitely recommend both books, if you're looking for lots of new insights into the movie, you may just be disappointed. I personally wasn't because for me that was not a main reason to read them. What I love about her first memoir, Home, is how it really sort of shows how Julie became the wonderful person that she is, and how truly extraordinary that is considering how she grew up. Just my two cents.

I would say Charmian Carr's book 'Forever Liesl' is great from that point of view: she sets out to tell it how it was, and particularly about the day-to-day on-stage happenings. There is lots of info in there, and she drops in juicy bits, enough to keep you interested! I would recommend it as a good read. Have fun!

I've read Home too, and I can easily say that it's one of my favorite non-fiction books. It's also one of the reasons why I got Home Work ♡

I checked it out from the library, but it is now on my Amazon list to buy. I can't wait to watch the movie again with my new "insider info" in mind. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hi there! I finished the book in one go last night (it was THAT interesting), and to say that I laughed and cried a lot is an understatement. Also, I did have loads of fun reading it Thank you so much for the extra push I needed to read it, IndigoBlue! SUPER worth it! reverendcaptain I watched the movie again today, and needless to say, I laughed and smiled a lot to myself while watching SOM. Like after reading some threads here, it really does change the way you look at the movie (in a good way)! Can't wait to hear your experience of reading the book then watching the movie ♡

So, I had to buy "Forever Liesl", it was not enough to just read it once from the library. One of my favorite parts of the book was the fan letters between chapters describing the impact the movie had on someone's life. I was thinking that any one of us could write one of these letters, as we have all obviously been greatly impacted by this film. I checked out Charmian's other book "Letters to Liesl" from the library. I just started reading it today, but it appears to be almost all fan letters with a little bit of commentary from Charmian in between.
Reading these books got me thinking, have any of you ever written a fan letter to anyone from TSOM?

Which I actually enjoy quite a bit.

I think CP’s memoir and Julie’s first are both really fabulous - agree that you don’t learn that much more about TSOM but they both have lead such interesting lives!!

She’s actually a very sweet and down to earth woman. When I went to the lodge, I was relaying messages back and forth between her and the various people she knew there. Very cool experience. She’s always asking for suggestions on how to improve her work or your thoughts on it, and she means it. She will contact you to remind you to do so. She’s a delight. And she’s also very no nonsense.

I bought Chris's memoir a few days ago and I'm in the process of reading it, seeing some of the insight in his early life plus I just ordered Charmian's book so I'm looking forward to reading it!

I found Chris' book fascinating, and the title especially apt.
