Has anyone ever noticed that in some of the scenes, the Captain is looking at the camera for maybe just a few minutes and turns his attention back to Maria or any of the characters? I noticed this while going through some of my old SOM photos I managed to savage from my old computer. Here's an example from a wallpaper background I created: I've caught myself either waving at him or just getting butterflies because of those eyes!!

I can't think of anywhere where any of the other characters do this (although in the pic on the left of him, in his Smokin'Jacket, he is looking at the kids' line-up to the R of us.) Maybe it has been done deliberately to show his authority ? It is quite a commanding look!

This is my collage of every scene where I caught him looking at the camera (except the first one which was behind the scenes).

Delicious, all of them!
Do you think it is a pose encouraged by CP himself? He was such an experienced actor by this time that it's possible it was something he brought to the party. Alternatively the director Robt Wise must have suggested it.
The only thing is that I believe CP had done very little work in cinema, and it seems a cinematic rather than theatrical thing to do.

I'd think so, honestly, because he did have a part in changing the role of the Captain, and like you said, it's kind of a commanding look so it'd fit perfectly! I think I may've watched another movie where he looked at the camera for a brief second but I don't remember the title off the bat.

I think it's very effective in bringing the audience into the scene, making it seem like they are part of the action or in on the joke or feeling the tension.
My favorites in your collage are the two middle pics on the bottom row. Look at those gazebo eyes! And how he's looking at me at the wedding! I could stare into those eyes all day.

His eyes (not to mention that voice!) is what drew me to him (and my mom just happens to share the same birthday with him)!

Hey @msduckymallard33 I love this whole thread! I like the idea that it’s part of his whole approach to make the character more interesting.

I was delighted to find this thread (I've been reading old threads lately as some of you may have noticed). I found particularly interesting this article on "The look at the camera" that might explain our theories that it is something indeed deliberated. I believe this might have been something agreed between RW and CP, perhaps, to underline the character's authority as you said (in some scenes) and his vulnerability (in others scenes, like the look on the garden bench before declaring his love to M).

A look at the camera certainly makes that moment very IMMEDIATE!

thanks for reviving this thread missisa. Never in a million years would I have thought it an exception for an actor to look toward the camera, but in fact, I can't think of anyone else who does it in the film, and oh how effective! It's like reverendcaptain said, maybe this is why I feel I am a part of the movie and it's a part of me!

Thank you augiesannie it's always cool to rescue old threads 😊 so you suggest that, as it is a resource that only he does, it is something of CP and not of RW?
