I guess I can understand why the Captain wears military looking jackets like this linkor even like this linkI definitely prefer him in the kind of suit we see him with at the dinner table, on the balcony, and in the gazebo, so handsome - linkbe still my heart! linkBut then why is he wearing this jacket for the Edelweiss scene which we know is in the evening, since it ends with the children going to bed? linkBTW while researching this thread, I found a great article on Georg's costumes. DEFINITELY worth a read! PS sorry for all the links, but with all my complaining about image sizes I don't want to be a hypocrite!

Fantastic article on Georg's clothes - and wonderfully researched!
It's filled a gap which needed attention. Thanks, Anne.

I have always been curious how Georg manages to look quite so snappy when he has been morosely tucked away in rural Salzburg for years, without even the Navy to help him keep up his sartorial standards of dress...This article explains much of it, with the raked equestrian pockets and slim-fitting jackets draped on Mr P's slender body (ooh, I must stop before I get too excited at the thought) - No, let's go on - also details on his shirt cuffs and collars...shame it doesn't go further into whether he wears boxers or Y-fronts - oh, I really must stop!

Awesome article! It must have been quite fun to research too - let's go through the movie frame by frame and see which shots show the most of Georg's body, and then comment on those screencaps. Sounds like my kind of project! Don't stop indigoblue! Do we know what kind of underwear was typical at the time? I should probably not google this. hahaha. For what it's worth, I think he seems like a boxers kind of guy.

Also from the article - I didn't know that Dorothy Jenkins was Sister Augusta!
Sister Augusta, take our new postulant to the robing room. And steal her dress so that Maria has something cuter than the dress the poor doesn't want to go get her man!

Regarding the underwear, I couldn't resist it!
Wikipedia tells me that boxers were invented (for boxers) in 1925 for free movement, then became generally more popular.Y-front briefs were invented in the late 1930s.
Assuming Georg wasn't RIGHT at the forefront of fashion, I'll put money on him being in boxers...also, boxers are supposed to be better for male fertility, so I think seven children sort of clinches it!
Now ReverendCaptain, over to you for some juicy screencaps!

Those 'military-looking' jackets are actually based on traditional loden Trachten jackets, which are available here and hereAs for C Plums, he was quoted once as saying, "I can't look bad in a suit, I can't help it, it's just the way I'm built". I wholeheartedly agree.

Hmm, can't help feeling those jackets look a whole lot better on our Captain rather than the models provided!
But these don't have the little gold clip things on each lapel which Georg does; any ideas what these are, and what they signify?

What a fun post. Sigh. I have this article book-marked from when I found it in January. Sighs again. (dare I say I have a huge folder of bookmarks cheerfully identified as "S&M" as CP was wont to call it - I shall see if I can find some fun ones to share)

I can't get a really good look at them, but my guess would be some sort of insignia relating to his rank.

I often struggle writing about Maria's undergarments, perhaps I need to start a thread about that?

I am the only one who has sighed sadly when reading the caption of a photo of the article: "von Trapp never removes his jacket on screen"
yeah what a pity!
BTW my honeymoon was in Austria and my husband bought a Tyrolean hat, now that I think about it, maybe I influenced his decision LOL

Just think how steamed-up we would all have become if the Captain had removed not only his jacket (phew!), but his shirt onscreen (faints away)!
I can't help noticing the models are wearing lederhosen in the second advert for Austrian jackets. Do you think Georg did a natty line in leather trousers?

Haha good point @indigoblue! Actually I think it's that subtlety of showing almost anything of G's body that make our imaginations run wild; maybe after all it's better this way for our fantasies LOL

Haha Augiesannie, trust you!!
I'm sure the riding crop is part of the getup too, but I couldn't help noticing that little flap at the front of the lederhosen...handy little flap, don'tcha think?!
