hey all! I couldn’t find a thread to post this under, but I really wanted help with a story idea! I’m terrible at writing but I want to give it a shot! there’s a new song that came out by my favorite artist, Marina, and it’s called Highly Emotional People. I think this song would be a perfect story set up for one about Georg, either from the POV of Maria or by the audience. I’m having a hard time figuring out where to start or how to even write a song-inspired fic but I could really use the help!

Hi! Haven't heard the song yet, but I do have a little experience with songfics. I'm not the best but I really do hope it helps :> - some people use only a portion of the song or scatter parts of it throughout the fic (whether it be a one shot or multi-chaptered). it really depends on you, but it's really important to set this up! sometimes, adding too much of the song can muddle you up, or adding too little can make you feel a little eh. if you're just going for the vibe, you can opt not to put the lyrics or simply weave some of it in the dialogue if you're feeling up to it. Just establish it earlier on because keeping focused on what you want really helps! - dump documents help a LOT. sometimes as you listen to the song, bits and pieces come to you. put these bits and pieces either in a document or a note app, and then pair them up with particular lyrics. it doesn't have to be in order, but it's nice to have it written immediately (then just ctrl + f when needed). you can add your notes in here, too, if you have any! it really does help a lot when you're stuck and you don't know how to proceed !! - literally just have fun with it! it's your universe -- you put them in this setting and in this song, and so you have control over it! try not to worry about it too much: watch as much TSoM as you want to, and listen to Marina on loop (and similar songs) if you want to! writing fics is about expressing love for the characters (and in this case, for your chosen song), so it really won't be worth it if you don't enjoy doing it! Plus, I think that no one is terrible at writing -- everyone has their own styles and it's not something that one can't develop anyways! You're defo going to nail it <3 Have fun!

What I find helps (I have never published a songfic, though I always intend to when I start them!) is to pick out the part or parts, even if it's just a few words, that struck you as relating to the characters and/or the story you have created. That is your best starting point, in my mind! As said above, a lot of the formatting is up to you! If you want to take a section from each verse and write a different scene around them, or just write a story based on the song in its entirety, you have the freedom to do so! If you are interested in looking at how others have done it, I'm sure we could send you a few of our favorite songfics to look at that are formatted differently to give you a few ideas. (I would also second the usage of a dump document, which itsdayandnight also recommend to me a while back. Having all your ideas in one space is SO helpful.) We are all our own worst critics, but we all write for love and we all love to read each other's work! So do not worry about being "bad".

I only have a tiny bit of experience with songfics but one of my recent stories was inspired indirectly by a lot of songs and I really love the advice everyone is giving above - just start by jotting down some bits of dialogue or description of a scene that the song makes you think about. Don't get too hung up on matching up with the song.
I didn't know it was called a dump document but that is how I write all my stories! As the pieces start turning themselves into chapters I color them.

thanks y’all for your suggestions!! I already started jotting down the lyrics and coming up with ideas! I can’t wait to get this story going (I also should have said I was a terrible creative writer, I could write exposes and research all day long lol)

I wrote one (Just a Kiss). I repurposed some of the lyrics as dialogue, and I think that was really the first step toward it all coming together. I thought about scenarios where those statements would make sense, and what the general feeling would be.
I don't know if that will help you. Good luck!
