I was reading a piece by a professional director today (he is putting on a semi-professional performance of TSOM locally soon).
I was interested to read that he said the reason three songs from the play were omitted from the film was because they required Elsa to sing in them, but Eleanor Parker couldn't sing a note in tune, and she refused to be dubbed!
Those songs were: Ordinary People, No Way to Stop It, and How Can Love Survive.
I'll give you an update on what they were like next week...

I have also read a different explanation for dropping the latter two songs (Elsa doesn't sing Ordinary People, except in some alternative universe where she stands her ground and Maria slinks back to the Abbey for good). I read that they decided to downplay the triangle of Georg, Elsa and the Nazis, and play up the triangle of Georg, Elsa and Maria, as more Hollywood friendly. (Also, some people have said they were trying to downplay the whole Nazi thing). Have also read that Lehman thought Elsa and Max were weak characters, which I do NOT agree with.

It's An Ordinary Couple, and is sung by Maria and Georg. Something Good replaced it in the film. The other songs were removed because of the focus on the romantic triangle rather than Elsa and Georg parting ways over the Nazi thing, just as @augiesannie says.

I’m getting quite tiresome some on this triangle point, I just made it in another thread! Time to find some new material.
“Ordinary People” LOL. sorry.
