something Chris&Byng said made me wonder about chapter length. I seem to have a natural chapter length of about 4000 words. Sometimes a little longer. I am wondering if those of you who write stories have a word number that makes you think, "oh no, too long!" when you read a story, do you have a sense of how long is, you know, too long?

My chapter length is also of about 4000 words. FWIW, the font I use, is Courier New, size 8. With that size, 4000 words is 8 pages. But I always wait to reach a natural pause in the story, like the end of a "scene." Sometimes it's 7 pages long, and other times is 9 or even 10. It depends.

I have destroyed this story multiple times, and I regret nothing.

I don't think I have a typical chapter length that I hang around, it all depends on the exact subject and nature. In my current piece, I have chapters from about 1500 to 6500 and everywhere in between, plus a 10000 word chapter that I split into two posts to avoid the wall o' text. (But the longer ones are pretty dialogue heavy...) As long as a chapter is expressing one cohesive thought rather than suddenly running into the next one and the next one, I think pretty well any length is fine. Just don't waffle on, like in any story. *coughs looks in the mirror*

I am wondering if those of you who write stories have a word number that makes you think, "oh no, too long!" when you read a story, do you have a sense of how long is, you know, too long? With my first story, I started out relatively small chapter-wise. Probably because it's a good way to go when you are new at this. I found, however, I saw this 'tableau' unfolding in my head - I could have cut it in 2 or 3 places, but for some reason, I kept on until I reached the natural end. Earlier on in one of my stories I thought (peer pressure) "This chapter is too long" and so I cut it at a natural break. It was ok, but I almost liked it as one big "flow" as it had developed in my head. @idontknowyoursignal and I (Sorry, don't know your handle on here!) were talking about how HARD it is to write long chapters...but they are a glorious thing when they work out nicely.
When it comes to stories about G&M and the rest of the gang, is there really any such thing as "too much" !
