OK, this is not a new idea - I can see it was discussed here on and off over the years - but what would it be like to have a story where it turns out Agathe was not such a saintly person but Maria doesn't realize it at first and labors under the misimpression that she is somehow "less than." Kind of like "Rebecca," although it would be complicated by having the children around, but then again it might be interesting to write the older children as reserved about their mother. Maria could think it was grie but it's really something else. I have a lot of other story ideas so this one would have to wait but I would love to see someone else take it on!

Yes, I do think we have been a little wedded to the idea that Georg was besotted with Agathe, and wrestling with grief at her death.
Maybe Georg's passion for Maria is because she is at last the one who makes him feel whole, and his family happy?

This potential storyline is blowing my mind a little. It has never crossed my mind that Agathe could be anything other than the best wife and mother ever.

Oh that would be an awesome story. So much potential conflict and angst with Georg and Maria could play out.

This is a fascinating idea but too daunting for me.
I think if this scenario were true the children would be far more affected than Georg. I feel like he'd be put off becoming a family man at all - he'd probably put up with her during his short leaves from the military than gladly escape again, like 'good Lord, that ghastly woman.' I wouldn't be certain even Maria could reform him. I feel like the story was so effective mostly because we KNEW somewhere in G was a warm, loving family man...

What if Georg & Agathe were in an arranged marriage. In that case he wouldn't be happy with it, but soldiers on for the children. Perhaps he was so happy and besotted with Maria because he felt the opposite with Agathe. If that made sense? I don't know, but it makes a good theory.

...or it has crossed my mind that maybe the reason Georg and Agathe got married was because she was pregnant...
