So all the caps of this moment are mostly blurry children. Which pretty much sums up children in my experience... but I digress. But this one wasn't blurry and I really like it. The last scene here was Maria singing about having confidence in an attempt to give herself some. And here, she looks quite confident indeed. So I thought maybe we can discuss what exactly has made her go from "Seven children?!" to all smiles and more energy than an adult caring for seven children should ever have. I'm tired. Don't mind me. There are going to be more screen caps of them roaming around Salzburg but I wanted to start here because I really do like this cap.

me too lemacd. I really never stopped to consider Maria at this moment. I imagine her confidence level grew starting with Liesl's confidences and the thunderstorm. Plus, some time has gone by, at least long enough to sew the playclothes, so maybe other confidence-builders have occured. Although how those children could grow attached to her after trying on those uniforms I do not know. The girls' are not so bad but the boys! But I digress. Why does she have a scarf on her head?

Hmm. I wonder if much of her apparent confidence isn't something new, but rather the same chaotic energy she had at the abbey, because she definitely seems to be a ringleader of benign trouble amongst the group on their outings. She's worked through the worries overwhelming her as she was approaching the house for the first time and figured out how to manage her charges. (Obviously, she has that confidence buried in her based on that confrontation in her bedroom during the thunderstom.) Then with the Captain gone and the children on her side--I'm willing to believe it might have taken a little while for them to trust her fully--she's able to forget his rules and go back to the person she was before.
I think about her face when the children say they don't know any songs, and I think that is when her confidence really starts to grow, because she almost looks offended and determined to change that.

all good things to consider. I think the most obvious factor is the missing gloomy guy, Captain von Trapp. I'm sure even the children felt more relaxed and up for anything she could cook up for them to do. In this cap, however, she just looks like she's in her element, if that is the right way to put it. They are children and she is like a child in her interests and enthusiasm... taking them out for a romp in the mountains is in her wheelhouse for sure, so yes, she's confident. augiesannie maybe she had to strike a deal with Louisa to get her to wear hers. Or maybe it was only proper for women to wear some kind of hat in public and that big ugly one she brought with her would be quite cumbersome for their activity and this was the next best option. Dunno... I agree that they have spent some time together by this point so they get along well.

Maybe the reason she is looking so happy is because the boys downright refused to come out in those playclothes (kids being kids...).
But after half an hour of bribery and corruption, they finally agreed to come (but only if she fed them syllabub up the mountain).
The haircovering: might be a nun's rule to cover your hair whenever out?

I love this screen cap! I think this really is Maria's natural state - a day roaming and singing in the mountains, like she was in the opening scene (and it was a transgression then.) She's more subdued in the villa.
The hair covering - maybe a practical piece to guard against the mountain wind? Elsa has one on as well, when we first meet her.

Not wanting to be pedantic, but I see she is in a sufficiently 'natural state' to omit taking a purse to pay for all those children - Let's see...I mean 8 entries to the Mirabell Gardens, 8 x bicycle hire, hire of a horse and carriage, 8 x tickets for the mountain railway, etc etc.

I go with a double theory: 1) she is satisfied with the rebellion of the curtains and the successful tailoring for 7 people in record time. 2) time has obviously passed and there is a very attractive man with a sexy whistle about to return home to whom she'll be able to rubbing in his face the fact that she no longer needs clothes material, if Maria can ever have that kind of malice 😂😂😂😂😂😂

You guys have the confidence topic covered. I have nothing to add there.
As for the head scarf, maybe it is just the style? Many pictures that I have seen of the real Maria she is wearing a similar head scarf. I think Elsa's was to protect from the wind in the convertible, but I don't think that Maria cares if her hair gets wind blown. Maybe it is sun protection since they are planning to be outside all day?
Where did she get these shoes?
As for money, it could be stashed in her guitar case, though the baskets seem easier to get to. But, if the children were supposed to stay at home marching about the grounds and doing schoolwork, Maria probably would not have been given money to spend on activities with them in the first place. Maybe she asked Frau Schmidt and found that there was a stash left by the captain to be used on the children for emergencies, and she let Maria use it for fun?

Those shoes are quite smart for a postulant! Maybe they were left behind by Fraulein Josephine?
Also, is she wearing 'nylons'?! They're rather forward for a nun too, aren't they?
