Oh, dear, well, in the two years since I last published anything, I've been playing with a story idea that began when I challenged myself to write a Georg who is so wicked it borders on evil, while still allowing him redemption and a cozy HEA. Plus I don't seem to have gotten mature scenarios out of my head. I've written thousands and thousands of words. And now that things are falling into place, I fear that I have created a Georg so appallingly, squirmily horrible that everyone will hate him (and possibly, by extension, me). I considered publishing under a different name in fact. Why am I posting about this here? I don't really have an ask. Other than, perhaps, for some encouragement.

I have destroyed this story multiple times, and I regret nothing.

Sitting on the fence here. I think there probably is a limit, because surely there needs to be a direct throughline to the characters in canon and if this new version is just dropped out of the sky, yes, I would read that as too dark for that moment. However, I also think the limit is a lot further away than most people think. Little changes in the characters should add up until in a very understandable way, they might bear no more than a passing resemblance to the ones in canon. IMHO, it's all in how you play it. If he has gone through experiences that twist him and leave him as this dark human being, as readers, we can start to understand why, even if we don't like it. *insert theory about the heightened sympathy for depression than bi-polar disorder here* (I know I didn't type anything you don't already know, lol.)
Truly irresponsible content aside, you aren't responsible for your readers' feelings. My two dead presidents.

well, I think we all carry inside an innocent and misinformed child who came to "hate?" the captain at the beginning of the movie, I remember thinking why he was such an evil dad and then being surprised when he turns good. What I mean is that, perhaps, with your story you awaken those primitive feelings of each of us :-)

Ultimately, I so so so agree with galan - you aren't responsible for your reader's feelings. Regarding your question, I think there is a difference between being hateful and being "dark". "Dark" to me usually implies a sympathetic backstory and/or sympathetic motives, even though we might not necessarily be on board with how the character acts or the consequences of those actions. Also, I think my sympathy for G would depend on how Maria sees him. Personally, I'm a total sucker for a good redemption arc, especially if there is sizzling chemistry.

Hmmmm I think it can go either way to be honest. Some won’t like it. Some will be fine. There are hundreds of stories of loving, tender, sweet Georg so to change it up would be interesting. I’m certainly not sure what you have in mind but at the end of the day, if it’s not my cup of tea, then I’ll move along. You can always get a few trusted friends/fans to read it first and go from there. But at the end of the day, it’s your story and people do not have to read if they aren’t comfortable. I mean no disrespect in saying that so I hope I did not offend anyone. By the way, you write great stories 😊
