In another thread, we were discussing how much we liked missing moments stories. I wrote them for a long time, until I got the confidence to go AU, but AU is very risky, so I am feeling drawn to try missing moments again. Which are your favorites? Over the years, there have been a lot of "telling the children," but there are never too many. Another that I'm thinking about lately is the dinner scene just after Maria's return - I've seen a few of these but not a lot - what do you think happens?
PS happy new year everyone!

I have destroyed this story multiple times, and I regret nothing.

One thing I've always wondered about was Georg's exact reaction to knowing that Maria had returned to the abbey. It had to have been a strange mixture of emotional turmoil and refusal to BE emotional, especially given how he intentionally clears the children away to give himself a moment alone with her the first moment he can when she's back, before the Baroness wanders onto the scene again. He clearly needs to know her answer, and really, her comment that "the reason no longer exists" has to give him some clue. (Wrote about that reunion moment a long time ago, but not from that angle, plus I was an even worse writer than I am now, lol. Maybe I'll try to tackle that combo next!)

Oh gosh, I have so many, and I think we'd all agree that we wish almost everything was in the movie. Maria's return is one of my favourites to read about (and write about, to a certain extent) because I think it lends so much weight, texture, and emotion to the story. We had some downs during the movie, of course -- but actually being able to read about Maria and Georg's anguish during the time Maria was away or the tension during that dinner (and/or after) is something that (I think) balances out the usual fluff written. But I think one of the best things to write material to is the time in between the lake scene and The Lonely Goatherd. That's three to six weeks of tension and longing and it's always so entertaining to read about. Maria blushing? Perfect. Georg trying not to stutter in front of Maria? Perfect. Max having fun? Absolutely Perfect.

I would read any missing scene. I have so many questions that need answers!
Specifically, I often wonder about what happened right after the gazebo scene ended. Did they reveal any more about their feelings over the summer? feeling when she left? feelings when she returned? feelings after they kissed? Did they kiss more? Did they walk hand in hand back inside not caring who saw them? Did they stay up late talking in his study? I imagine it was the best night sleep either of them had had in weeks. (not like that, people!) I mean, once a problem that has been consuming you is resolved, you are finally able to function again.

I'd like to know what they did when they both awoke the next morning (in SEPARATE rooms, folks - sorry!) Did they rush to find one another? Were they nonchalant, needing to check whether Elsa had definitely gone back to Vienna? Were they keen to ensure they both still felt the same way before they told the kids? So many possibilities!

I'm with itsdayandnight - I LOVE anything during the phase between the apology and the party.
Not necessarily missing moments, but I also like "backstories" that explain certain (any) scenes. Why are the children so afraid of thunderstorms? I think there was a thread about why Georg wanted to swap out the governess's curtains. I also remember a hilarious story by lemacd about Elsa's harmonica that forever changed the way I see that scene.

you know, I was reading these suggestions and, while over the years, I've written bits and pieces of some of the above - the time before the party, the morning after the gazebo - I seem to have gone more AU and hotter. It isn't ONLY because I find myself drawn to the spicy stuff. (No, really). Or because I prefer AU. It's also because it is so challenging not to go OOC - not to make Georg all wimpy and starry-eyed, and to make Maria just modest and innocent enough without being either a total wimp or a siren. My hat is off to people who manage to get that balance right. Even though I have a headful of AU ideas, this thread makes me want to try! Thanks itsdayandnight, reverendcaptain, galan and laurynvi!

I just read a post elsewhere by reverendcaptain about how much fun it is to think about the time between The Apology (I love how she capitalized it) and the puppet show (shouldn't that be capitalized too?) because she thinks "a lot has transpired relationship wise." And that made me think about how those intervals are the really challenging and rewarding ones to write about, because it's not so obvious how these two characters would interact with each other in a realistic way, as opposed to, you know, the gazebo (The Gazebo) or something. Once again I keep changing my mind about what to write about.

Though, I kind of think every scene should be capitalized. They are all so important in some way!

Once again I keep changing my mind about what to write about. I do like the in between times. I think between The Apology and The Puppet Show there is so much to discuss about them first beginning to accept one another (where as before they were battling at every turn), then they can move into mutual respect, and finally friendship. They stand so close to one another after the puppet show is over, they are obviously comfortable/have spent a considerable amount of time together. I think they are genuinely friends at this point. Then, in between Edelweiss and The Party. Here, they go from friends to something more, though it is not acknowledged by either of them (until The Laendler in my opinion). Many delicious story options here too.
