Wow! It must have been taken before they decided to turn down the lights (because they were laughing so much!)
But it looks like it's for real...yes, gah! Love it!

this image speaks so much to the subtlety of understanding both of these complicated characters - she is just on the edge between innocent and eager, and he is - well, you get my point. Thanks MeltIntoSpring!

Yes, but its so REAL!
You know, I think this is from when the camera crew and the director went for a tea break, and JA and CP wanted to talk a bit more about how they should play the scene. So they practised a bit and then...and then...

just found this today and I was reminded of this thread. a nice full shot of the beloved picture we use for the forum!! look at Julie & Chris' hands!! *swoon* Yowza, mariarainers, where did you get THAT?!? To me, this one looks real, like they are just hanging out or rehearsing, but not actually performing. Which is so cool!

I’m obsessed.

I am in love with the 2 pictures in this thread. There are a lot of SOM pics that I like, but both of these instantly went into my top 5. I just can't stop staring at them. The lighting and positioning and...everything is just...wow.

There's a certain magic to it being shot in the dark--imagination, thoughts experiments, all that good jazz--but being able to just see it has its own magic.

From a cinematic standpoint, the scene being shot in silhouette is beautiful, but I would give anything to watch the scene in the light as was originally intended. Then again, Julie and Chris' laughter leading Robert Wise to shoot it in the dark shows what a genius of a director he was!

I wonder if we would think it was beautiful, genius, etc., without seeing it in the context of a very classic movie. Even from when I was a kid, I always wondered what it would look like in proper lighting. But obviously, it works and that's the mark of a good artist, I think, it leaves you wanting more while loving what you've been given. (Like most people on this forum, every time the gazebo scene end, I find myself wondering, "What next? It can't just end there!") Confirmation bias of a sort?

I know people often don’t like it that I end my stories with matters left to the reader’s imagination, but OTOH “always leave them wanting more,” you know?

I think that's what I was trying to say, but much better. The fact that it probably was probably the best way to shoot/end the scene doesn't stop me from wishing I could know.
