Have any of you ever been to a Sound of Music Sing-A-Long? I used to go annually with my kids, and it is something that I truly miss since Covid started.
I'm not sure how it works everywhere else, but here some people dress up, some as the main characters - Maria, Georg, Elsa, RM, the children, some as random things from the movie - the lonely goatherd, a doorbell, a needle pulling thread, Fraulein Schweiger etc. and then there is a costume contest.
Everyone in the audience gets a bag of props and the emcee goes through when to wave each of them around during the movie.
There are sound effects that everyone is encouraged to do when certain characters show up (hiss at Elsa, boo at any Nazi, Aww at Gretl, etc.)
The theater is packed and every single person sings every single song as loudly as they can. With the exception of the song the nuns sing in Latin near the beginning of the movie. The emcee will then yell out "Why aren't you all singing?? You all told me you knew every word to every song, let's hear it!" And everyone laughs.
The audience is encouraged to yell out whatever they want (as long as it is family friendly) during the movie. So, for example, people will yell "You forgot your hat, Maria!" when she starts running down the mountain without it. Or people will yell "Door number 1" or "Door number 2" or "Door number 3" all at the same time while Maria is in the foyer of the house looking towards the closed doors, as if they are the audience on a game show trying to help her decide which door the prize is behind. Then everyone cheers when she picks the ballroom. One of the props is a little confetti popper that you are supposed to pop when they kiss, but some people always pop it the second they see the captain, to which the emcee will yell out "no premature popping, ladies!"
In short, it is SO FUN! The screen is huge, the popcorn and beers are huge too. It is great to see so many people who love this movie all together. I miss it so much! We've tried to recreate it at home, but it's just impossible. The random unexpected comments are the best part, and that just can't be recreated.
I guess the point of this post is that I love SOM sing a longs, and miss them, so I am hoping that others have experiences to share to give me those good vibes since I can't get them from a theater until Covid is over.
