Here is something to lift the hearts of those of you still in Covid lockdown - a fabulous Rogers and Hammerstein concert! I have always loved watching musicians making music, and have for years wanted to see TSOM being played by a full orchestra...well here it is, with three fabulous soloists. Here is a 15 minute clip from a BBC Promenade Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, showing the SOM songs, and though the originals are still my favourites, I think you'll agree these three do the music justice: the end of Climb Every Mountain brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for the music Richard Rodgers and Irwin Kostal - I hope you enjoy it! www.youtube.com/watch?v=25IsnIDENgENB For a link to the whole concert, see below.

Love this @indigoblue thank you for posting! I've been looking for the instrumental music only for ages (I wanted to play it in my wedding and finally managed to find some Edelweiss instrumental but this is definitely better )

Oh, Indigo! This is gold! The last note had me cheering out loud (along with everyone else).
Tomorrow morning on the treadmill, as I sing along to the soundtrack in my head, I will be imagining that I have a full orchestra backing me up!
Have any of you ever played in an orchestra? I have, but not for years. And we never played any SOM songs, though I wish we had! This is such a cool idea!

Glad it put a smile on your face!
My one regret in life is that, although I have done many things, playing in an orchestra or band has not been one of them. But there's still time - especially if it's SOM stuff! But maybe I'd burst out singing if I was playing it...

I just love the look on that lady's face at the very end - total ecstacy!
Just wish we could hear the applause...

oh WOW. I know I'll be listening to this again and again. Thanks indigoblue. It's been a year or so since clarinetjamie visited here, so I don't know if she'll see it, but she's an accomplished band/orchestra musician.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaemq2Ck6mIHere is the link to the whole of that superb Rodgers and Hammerstein concert, for those of you who love all their music - Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, Flower Drum Song and Sound of Music. And this video includes the encore after Climb Every Mountain, so you can see the reaction to Kim Criswell's amazing performance! I can't imagine what it must be like to be her standing in the middle of that concert hall with so many people, and the backing of a huge orchestra and choirs, and then raising the roof with a song like that - exhilarating!

I've been trying to put my finger on what I love so much about this rendition of Climb Every Mountain (besides the fabulous performance), and I just got it. RM's solo is epic. Then when they reprise the song during the last shot, it is a choir singing in multiple part harmony. The version in this link has the soloist, but with the choir harmony from the last scene backing her up. It sounds so awesome together!

Well spotted - this performance gives me a higher high than I could get from drugs...
It's that look on her face and the roar of the audience when she nails the top note at the end that says it all!
Ever considered the film with no music?

It's impossible for me to consider this film with no music! Even with the brilliant acting, there is no way that the movie could have succeeded. The love story is what hooks me with this, and it could never have been what it was without Edelweiss and the Laendler. It wouldn't be the beloved family film without The Sound of Music and My Favorite Things and Do-Re-Mi. Even if it had all of the singing numbers, I couldn't even imagine it without the background music. It so often goes overlooked, but it is nonetheless spellbinding.
I think most movies need their soundtrack to be what they are. I was watching some behind the scenes type interview about a horror movie once, and the director said that initially the studio had no interest because he showed it to them without music. Once the music was put in, they were sold. It went on to be one of the highest grossing horror movies ever. The point is, even a movie like that, which is certainly not known for catchy songs, can be transformed by background music.

Without the music the film would have been very good, but with it, it is magical.
