Can you tell when the following is supposed to take place?
Much to her surprise, over the course of her stay in Salzburg, Elsa Schrader had come to appreciate the countryside’s serenity. So lovely and peaceful! Sometimes, when Georg’s children were running about, she might even have wished for a bit more peace and quiet. At this moment, however, things were a little too quiet, so quiet that she could hear the lake lapping at the shore.
She forced her gaze back to Georg’s haughty, austere profile, half-afraid of what she would see there. Not that there was anything to be afraid of, not from a slip of a girl, a flibbertigibbet really, who by her own account would soon be on her way back to Nonnberg Abbey.
But Georg’s eyes remained pinned on the door that had just slammed shut behind the little governess.
It seemed like an awfully long time before he turned back toward her at last, smiling, and reached for her hand.

... somewhere between the Edelweiss and the Laender, when Elsa is already seeing Maria as a rival and has made up her mind to do something that will bring her back to the abbey, and yet she is still enjoying the tranquility of life in Salzburg, during the preparations perhaps, of the big party.
If it is not that moment, I would think of some time just after Maria has left the house and silence has taken over the villa again, Elsa finding herself pensively observing Georg and the captain plunged into melancholy, and Maria probably arriving at the convent (but this is not possible because of the door thing). 😊

to be honest, I'm not sure.
I get a feel that it is before the puppet show... the early stirrings of doubt for Elsa when she can easily dismiss it by a smile and a reach for her hand. But the thing about knowing she would soon be going back to the Abbey (because Maria just informed them of it), that makes it feels a little different, a little later, maybe when Maria's returned after running away.
Is there a right answer? Did I win?

It could be after Maria returns from the abbey, after the captain says "You are here to ...stay....?"

well, indigoblue and lemacd's last guess FTW. It was intended to be Elsa's POV upon Maria's return from the Abbey. But the real winner is me, because you saved me from embarrassing myself with a confusing start to a story. Sigh. Back to rewrite.

Back to rewrite. sometimes being a bit disoriented about what is happening before it becomes clear can be fun. ish?
