The song Somethin' Stupid always brings to my mind Georg's dilemma on the balcony when he is watching Maria by the lakeside - whether he should or shouldn't tell her he loves her (because if she still wants to be a nun, then saying he loves her will wreck their relationship). It's a song that Robbie Williams and many others have sung, but Frank and Nancy Sinatra's version captures the moonlit night and romance of it all for me (call me old-fashioned!) I always think it sounds like Georg singing too...trying to pluck up courage to tell her...
'I know I stand in line until you think you have the time
To spend an evening with me
And if we go some place to dance (the Laendler)
I know that there's a chance you won't be leaving with me
And afterwards we drop in to a quiet little place (the gazebo)
And have a word or two
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid like I Love You
And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true, it never seemed so right before.
But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late
And I'm alone with you...
The time is right, your perfume fills my head
The stars get red and oh, the night's so blue
And then I go and spoil it all
By sayin' something stupid like I Love You.
