reverendcaptain and indigoblue asked if I would share photos from my visit to Salzburg six years ago, so I am sharing a link to an album I created, below. Note that I didn't take pictures to try and do better than the beautiful photos you can find online of Salzburg or TSOM! I just took pictures that let me say, gosh I was there! My other photos are not really better than what you can find online. Let me know if the link doesn't work for you. Have you been to Salzburg? Photos to share? AugiesAnnie's Salzburg album

Yay! Your pics are lovely! And you look so happy in them!!
Are the 2nd-4th pics in the ballroom? I thought that was filmed on a set? Where was the gazebo on the grounds? Not in the place it is in the movie, right? The gate is open to the abbey - did you go inside? Do you think the horses in the fountain are now covered to preserve them from weather deterioration? Was everyone staying "at the villa" there for SOM tourism?
Sorry, I don't mean to badger you with questions. It's just exciting that these places actually exist! And I "know" someone who has been there!

Those are pictures of a room in the hotel that inspired the movie ballroom which, as you note, was a set in California. The room is lavish, but it wasn’t very big and also it was kind of dark (not those big windows looking out onto a terrace like in the set). I didn’t go inside the Abbey, I don’t think you were supposed to. I don’t recall seeing the bell on the outer wall but I might have forgotten to look for it. I don’t know why the horses are covered but I do remember there was a LOT of construction, cranes, etc, so maybe also protecting the from that. I was there for a conference sponsored by the Salzburg Global Institute and I think that is why a lot of people stay there. I’m sure there are TSOM tourists too. I know it’s popular during - wait for it - the Festival! I don’t even think there is a gazebo on the grounds anymore, they moved/expanded it to a park that is visited by tons of tourists (that’s where the picture taken with me is). Glad you enjoyed the pictures!

Great photos! And you also got the rain!
I love the fact that (I think) the lake is frozen and you can see a path across it like a footpath. Presumably this often happens.
Maybe the horses in the fountain are covered to protect them from the frost?

I have just posted a video in 'The Film/Costumes/Sew You Own Costumes' section, which shows someone first making her own Laendler dress, then some nice scenes (from 9:35) of sunny Salzburg and the Villa Von Trapp through which she skips wearing it. Thought it might be of interest for the views of Salzburg, the villa and the lake on a beautiful day.

archive.org/details/SalzburgSightAndSoundI thought I would post this lovely little film here, featuring Charmian Carr exploring Salzburg during the filming of the movie. It has been around for years and may already be posted somewhere on this forum, but I can't find it; it occurred to me that some of our newer members might not have seen it. There are also several trailers at the end, which amuse me as they had no idea when they made these that we would still be watching them nearly 60 years later! Listen to the one at 22:00 and take a guess at who is doing the voiceover...

It doesn't sound quite like CP to me, but maybe it is?? No one else would be more suited for the job!
