I was thinking about alternate universe fics at work today. Out of curiosity, how many of you like to read AU TSOM fics? If so, why?
I have a prompt for you (for whoever is interested): A reverse Cinderella. Maria is the youngest daughter of the King. He throws a ball in her honor to hopefully find her a dashing young man to marry and become the future king (and so she can become queen). Georg would be in the role of Cinderella. He's a father to several children (exactly like in the film). He is basically dirt poor & Max is his fairy godfather. The story plays out like the Cinderella story, but you have to factor in the seven children.
Bonus points: Maria's father is fairly decent. Oh, and Maria's mother is also alive.
I also think that the plot for The Court of Thorns and Roses series (by Sarah J. Maas) would make for a great AU prompt. I have the prompt for it if anyone is interested.

I read AU fics, but cautiously. I am happy to give most stories a try, and sometimes AU stories are fabulous, but other times they pull everyone so out of character that they are only themselves in name. The characters need to maintain their personalities for me to be hooked. I think many people like AU because there are only so many missing scenes that can be revealed (Not that I'm complaining. I could read missing scene stories all day). Though, sometimes it is fun to see the characters cover new ground. AU is a very broad term too. The AU could be that Maria didn't leave after the party, or it could be that G&M are modern day people who work at the same office building. Neither is a bad idea, but they are very different stories because they are such different levels of AU-ness.
That being said, your Cinderella idea sounds interesting! I would read it if anyone takes a try at it.

AU stories can sometimes be tricky to write. Thank you. I would take a crack at it, but I need to finish My Maria and I need to work on other fics that have been neglected. Another interesting twist on any sort of Cinderella AU: write it using the plot of the film Ever After. It's one of my favorite adaptations of Cinderella.

I had this idea for an AU randomly pop into my head as I was eating a pot pie (of all things haha). I am starting to get into the Succession fandom and started thinking about a TSOM fic where it is based off of Succession. Georg would take the place of Gerri and Maria would be in place of Roman. I am not sure why on earth I got this idea, but it just popped to mind. I'd attempt to write it, but I have already got several projects to finish (My Maria being one of the first).
Anyway, this would be something to think about, perhaps?

Anyway, this would be something to think about, perhaps? I'm a huge Succession fan! I never would've thought of this AU, but it could be very interesting...especially since most characters in TSOM are generally good, wholesome people, whereas everyone in Succession is pretty morally grey just because of the world they inhabit. Would Maria also have siblings like Roman does? Does she still have his drive to become CEO? How do Georg's children come into play (if at all)? A Succession AU with Maria as Greg, Georg as Tom, and Elsa as Shiv might also work. Both Maria and Greg are outsiders to the world of wealth and opulence, and Georg gets close to Maria although he's already committed to Elsa. On AU fics in general, I'm most drawn to canon-compliant stories, but I can appreciate a thoughtful AU. Also, I tend to think of AU stories as, well, taking place in an entirely alternate universe lol, like a modern AU or a fairy tale AU. I think stories where one part of canon is changed are usually called Canon Divergence (not that there's any official terminology haha).

I don't know about Succession. But I can say that when I started out, I didn't like AU fics, but over time, in the hands of really good writers, they grew on me. As others have said, the key is to keep the characters, well, in character. But then again, when I play with AU, it's often by starting with characters who aren't very much like the ones we know and love, but evolve to become them.
