www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLLl30c5hR8I came across this by chance, and became engrossed in this wonderful video of Julie singing the soundtrack of R&H's The King and I with Ben Kingsley and others. It demonstrates the complete star that she is, not just for her superb voice, but for her charismatic personality which lifts the whole studio with her. Mesmerising!

Fabulous! I love that they had the soloists and orchestra play together to feed off each other's energy before heading to the sound booth. Julie just looks so natural, doesn't she? Confident and comfortable. I love her expressions and body movement while she sings, even when she is alone in a sound booth. It's like she can't help herself from acting out the music.
I have never seen this play. Though, now I have 2 songs from it downloaded to my phone. Thanks!

And she is in tears when the king is dying.
I found the lady playing the female lead role in the film (?Deborah Kerr) rather 'straightlaced'; it underlines how wonderful it would have been if Julie had played it!
But it's a lovely film to watch with the kids.

Thinking of Julie shedding tears as the king is dying made me wonder whether she is (really) close to tears anywhere in TSOM? I know filming can be very fragmented, but she seems so upset when G&E announce their engagement that I do wonder sometimes.

I love the idea that the lovers have thought so much about what it would be like to be together, that it’s as though they already have. “In my dreams I’ve loved you so that by now I think I know what it’s like to be loved by you.”

I guess Julie might would have had to play it as more of an outspoken troublemaking Maria than the straitlaced (that’s an good word for it) Anna, but either type would have pushed back against the King’s controlling tendencies. One interesting difference is that the romantic tension simmers between Maria and the Captain from very early on, while it is barely acknowledged in King and I, but of course the King already has a zillion wives including one he’s beaten, so it kind of can’t go anywhere with Anna

They both just jumped out at me from this clip. I'll have to check out "I Have Dreamed". It sounds like a G&M kind of song.

I know filming can be very fragmented, but she seems so upset when G&E announce their engagement that I do wonder sometimes. She looks super close to tears when she's wishing them every happiness about their engagement. I think also when he sits by her on the bench at the gazebo. And maybe even when she hangs her head after she decides to leave the villa. And maybe when she goes to see the RM after seclusion. There are a lot of emotional scenes for Maria in this movie!

I think she is also close to tears when the Captain ticks her off after the thunderstorm in her room - but tears of anger!
